OK, I'm going to tweet about step-though bikes. As I said last night, I'm kind of lusting for one. So I spent some time perusing bikes and I'm prepared to share highlights. Let's do this.
As a preliminary let me say something that's obvious to some and news to others. Though they've often been categorized this way in the US, step-through bikes are NOT lady's bikes. This is absurd. Everyone rides what they want, end of story. I am willing to die on this hill.
I mean, if you're wearing a sundress, a step-through frame is awfully convenient. It's also pretty sweet if you just like Dutch style or like to get off your bike easily or just think illogical gender traditions are bullshit. We agree, right? Step through bikes are for anyone.
OK, so all this is a sampling of bikes I like. The point is NOT to say these are good step-through bikes for dudes. They just reflect a range of cool bikes I like. You might look and see other stuff you dig. Also, not suggesting any of these bikes are available now. Just dreamin'
First up is the classic Dutch look. This is the Azor Amsterdam. If I have this bike, I am going to pick up baguettes and bottles of corked beer at least twice a day.
I'm generally more inspired by the European vibe. Deal with it. If I had his cherry—the Pilen Lyx—I would buy a pair of Stan Smith's that I would ONLY wear while riding this bike. The chances of me wearing a helmet on this bike is roughly zero.
Before you typecast me as a beret-wearing wannabe, let's ponder something more American and muscular: The Norco Scene IGH 8N. I am going to pedal along the beach with Blood Sugar Sex Magik playing too loud on this bike.
Basic is like an insult all of a sudden, but a basic step-through is high art if done right. I like this Franklin 3-speed. $499 yo. I am going to ride this to the library and I'm definitely going to get a coffee-cup holder for the handlebar. Basically awesome.
OK, back to a Dutch daydream. I dare you to look at this Lekker Jordaan 3-speed and not imagine yourself carrying beers, kids, books, groceries, and the hopes of a healing nation. I feel like this bike needs to be on J Crew's mood board for Fall 2021.
I will wrap this with a few e-bikes. Sorry if that triggers you. First is this surprisingly modern take on classic Dutch—the Gazelle EasyFlow. I want to show up at a meeting on this and have a briefcase and a colorful blazer. I am going to ride through every puddle I see, too.
I'll be honest—the folding aesthetic often doesn't speak to me. I'm stoked folks like it. But I do feel fondness for this Tern HSD. It can hold 375 pounds with flair. The frame is weirdly beautiful. I'm going wear old jeans and a Rapha jacket with this.
My last e-bike looks like a well-traveled American. The Story Electric Step Through. They make it in four colors but it's red for me. I'm glad it doesn't have a visible battery (it's in the frame tubing). I truly wonder why the big bike companies don't have something like this.
That's it, hope you liked the bikes. Remember there aren't men's bike and women's bikes—there are just tons of bikes and everyone gets to pick whatever the hell they like. For me, right now, I'm thinking step-through. Have a great Saturday night!
