A Wamos Air Flight PLM556 conveying more than 200 stranded Nigerians arrived in Abuja from London on Tuesday.

The passengers were meant to return for COVID-19 tests yesterday but, guess what? Many of them did not show up!

First of all, this was meant to be an Air Peace flight and should have taken off on Monday July 13 but landing permit issues prompted a rescheduling with Wamos Air for Tuesday.

On arrival in Abuja, the passengers filled a form provided by the NCDC. They were also given six pieces of face mask, one bottle of hand sanitizer, a thermometer with which to check their temperatures morning and night and a sheet on which to record the figures.

They deposited their international passports with the Immigration and were to pick them up after 14 days. However, before collection, they were to present themselves at 9am on Saturday (three full days after arrival) for COVID-19 tests at M&M Events Centre in Garki, Abuja.

At 9am on Saturday, only a handful of them were seen. Majority of them had dispersed into different parts of the country to continue with their lives.

The authorities had no pre-arranged self-isolation housing for them, which is understandable, seeing the sheer number of infections they’re now dealing with, but these people surely ought to know better. Yet, from the airport on that Tuesday, they were already going home.

Somebody’s husband came to pick her. A lot of them went home to their parents, children and spouses. On top of their disregard for personal isolation, only VERY few of them came back for the test on Saturday.
7/11
Granted, the passengers did the test within two weeks of leaving the UK but if they came in contact with infected persons between departure from their residences and arrival in Abuja, then there’s a chance they’re not as clean as they might think.

Hopefully, one or two of them will see this & decide to be responsible by returning for the tests. The govt gets blamed all the time — and I know it is often deserved — but as citizens we must ask ourselves if we’re any better than the people we love to harangue and pillory.
9/11
Among the few compliant Nigerians who showed up for the test are a couple that has been self-isolating in a hotel on their own bills despite not haven’t seen their kids for months and an elderly man who self-isolated himself in Lokoja.

If only all other passengers were like these two and the few others who’ve behaved responsibly…
