John Harris can always be relied upon to gamely illustrate the Grauniad's incoherent politics. First, the left is to be scolded for its myopia in response to the defeat of Corbynism. Then, he outlines a policy programme that looks suspiciously like continuity Corbynism.
Clearly he doesn't want the left triumphant, despite his claim that it is his "side". He has hopes that Starmer can "reconnect with voters", which we all know means shifting to the centre on the economy & legitimising the "concerns" of knowledge-poor retirees in small towns.
The odds of the programme he outlines being enacted fall to zero as he segues to his usual panacea of localism, the Hobbit approach to politics. A test & trace system might work best at a local level, but a greened economy & a basic income both require a strong state.
Harris remains a Liberal at heart, which means his politics is based less on a frank assessment of the levers & powers needed to effect change, or the resistance they'll provoke, than the imagining of a virtuous community, whether that be Shire-folk or Beatles-era proletarians.
