Liberals are never going to admit their role in Brexit. This is not just about ignoring the self-indulgence & factionalism of 2018/19, but avoiding scrutiny of the entire era since 1975, which saw a strategic failure to embed EC/EU membership both politically & culturally.
Throughout the period it was pro-remain liberals of one stripe or another who framed the EC/EU as a power that had to be tamed, blamed it for unpopular policies that were initiated domestically & accused it of being insufficiently pro-US, from Thatcher through Blair to Cameron.
The idea that it was all down to Corbyn allows them to connect to the old narrative in which the left mostly did oppose the Common Market in the 70s/80s. That Corbyn voted remain & did everything in his power to avoid a hard Brexit is ignored in favour of "Always a leaver".
Europe was always an elite project in the UK, which is why it was always going to be vulnerable to a populist politics. Euroscepticism is weaker in other EU countries both because membership was better embedded in popular culture & established parties were less opportunistic.
It is opportunism that has distinguished the UK, & that applies as much to centrists trying to revive the LibDems or undermine Corbyn as it does to the Tories. We're getting a hard Brexit because liberals failed over many years & then blew their chance to soften the blow in Dec.
