Due to massive death of the royals themselves from the plague, and their leaving the cities to withdraw to country manors, unseen, the majority of ruling families were deposed and replaced all at once.

They were on much shakier ground politically. They brought in the banking families as essentially silent partners, to fortify their control. That became the New World Order. The monarchs are still involved but now in their place we have politicians who are controlled.
One positive development was these new royals also invested heavily in the arts, to raise their stature. This actually lead to the Renaissance.
