Here’s a portrait of a Meru leader, N’Dominuki, who was at times referred to as Dominuki.

At least that’s what early Europeans from John H. Patterson to explorer Arthur Neumann called him.

This photo was taken by John Guille Millais in the 1890s.
Some have suggested that the name was an Amerû mispronunciation of Dominic, which is a name that he may have been given by early missionaries. If that was so, then there must have been some missionaries in Meru in the 1890s.
