Day #53 of the Portland protests.

The moms have arrived.

The Portland tough mamas are why I believe American Democracy will survive.

In the next tweet you can hear them saying, "Hands up, please don't shoot."

I hope everyone is taking notes. The Portland mamas are showing how it's done.

The danger with protests that bad actors will infiltrate and turn them violent.

These mamas know how to make sure that won't happen.

They rock.
I agree ultimately this will fail⤵️

But Trump may still invade.

He's desperate to create the narrative that the real problem is the protestors and he's the strongman to solve the problem.

He doesn't realize this isn't the 1970s. "Suburbs" have changed.
A few years ago I explained why I didn't think he'd start a war with North Korea: He's a coward and I didn't think he'd risk damage to his properties or a bomb falling on his own head.

Making war on Detroit is the sum total of everything he is.
It's the ultimate in divisiveness. He's literally trying to create a Civil War. He gets to create 'us v. them,' where 'they' are the 'liberal Democrats.' He gets to send soldiers to commit violence. He gets to strut like a strongman without risk to his own property.
I checked a few Detroit stations. I don't see anything yet.

If the agents are acting on official orders, I'm pretty sure all they can do is get a restraining order.

The only time I know (other than the Civil War) where anything like this happened. . .
. . . was when Governor Orval Faubus ordered the Arkansas National Guard to prevent African American students from enrolling at Central High School. Central High was an all white school.

Eisenhower sent in national troops.

Obviously there were differences: The mayor of Little Rock asked Eisenhower for help. And the feds were not causing trouble.

But "arrest" could easily lead to armed conflict between state and federal officers, which is literally civil war.

I think they need a restraining order.
The way to win this is through public opinion. That's why the "mom" optics were good. I am persuaded that the goal is not a military (or paramilitary) coup. The goal is to gin up Trump's support, and recast the narrative.

He wants the election to be about the protestors.
From @steve_vladeck, DHS is relying on 40 U.S.C. § 1315—which was enacted in the Homeland Security Act of 2002 (signed into law by President Bush).

That's how I see it. Last time the 'enemy' was homeless migrant families. Trump, recall, committed human rights violations and broke US law in his treatment of the migrants.

Now we are the enemy.
They can dig up authority to support what they're doing now because of the hitch of federal property. But there is no authority for federal troops to monitor local polling places.

It would amount to a military coup, which I'm just seeing as likely.
He doesn't have many options, right? He needs an enemy and he needs one quickly.

Starting foreign wars would hurt his businesses.
I was wracking my brain for another example. Thanks.
Yup. Those danged keyboard gremlins.

Ordinarily I try to ignore my errors, but dropping the 'not' sort of changes things, right?

Thanks, @vavetisedu

Look, Trump would love to be able to pull of a military coup. Can he succeed? Highly unlikely.
