A short thread on it-
1. Lower stratas of society are always dumb enough to copy what super rich families do. They try to copy their names too for their kids. For example Rahul was a popular name b/c Rajiv Gandhi & Bajaj family named their son Rahul. 1/n
2. Then lower stratas copy their marriage rituals. Arrange marriages are a tool of Ambanis, Rothschilds, Kochs, Al Sauds etc. How?
3. They are dynasties. They will not allow some skank to enter their family or give their daughters to some unworthy guy. They’ve a lottt to lose
2/n
4. So they wait & see what their kids choose. If Ambani’s daughter choose Piramal’s son. It is okay. No problem. If she chooses a leftist social activist out of love. Dynasties will preserve themselves. She can’t let that idiot enter into the family.
5. Lower people just 3/n
copy paste this simple important thing without actually having that kinda wealth in family.
6. But in the process, they fuck up their genetic lines. Give their genetic disorders a chace to appear because their gene pool is small.
7. So! Only think of arrange marriages if 4/n
you own a jet, have houses in 20 countries, your single decision makes headlines in whole world and wall street reads about you. Arrange marriages are for dynasties. Not for Diabetic, High BP ridden egoistic small timers. If you make a dynasty, only then you have the right 5/n
to force a marriage alliance on your son or daughter. Copy the wealth and power first before copying other things from Dynasties. N/N

Story of India’s “Playboy” Magazine, nudity, arrest warrant, Ruskin Bond, and an actor’s hypocrisy.
🧵

Story of Debonair Magazine.

Playboy Magazine was a revolution in world entertainment. Not because of nude models, but because of the class & tastefulness it added.

In 1973, An enthusiastic entrepreneur Susheel Somani dreamt of starting such a magazine in India. The road was not so easy.

1/Image
Image
It was launched in 1973 with extensive teasers & marketing but somehow all the excitement came crashing down by the end of year. It was just not working. Owner decided to kill it.

Came to rescue Mr Vinod Mehta, a young guy in advertising who was the made the new editor of Debonair. He asked for six months to set the things right.

He started understanding why Playboy works. The art director M.G. Moinuddin was a genius to learn the designing by reading books. He was capable to fit in the designs and make desirable fonts. Other major staff included 2 women who just hated the nude models part in magazine. They always tried to stay away from its meetings.

Other English newspapers were also read & observed by Vinod Mehta. Nudity was not the only part about Debonair. In fact, nudity was limited to its “Centre Spreads”. A 4-page section inside the magazine like Centrefold in Playboy.

For other part, interviews, book & movie reviews, talks about gadgets, fashion products, diary Q&A, jokes, cartoons, and ads took up the space.

Vinod asked many journalists to send their pieces for the magazines but no one was ready to be attached with such an “obscene” magazine.

Initially, Vinod Mehta had to write many columns himself with pseudonyms.

Someone had to go and bring those 160 passengers of IC814 home from Afghanistan.

Major Jaswant Singh Rathore, Minister of External Affairs never even hesitated in going. His mother in hospital just had blood transfusion. His son Manvendra Singh was blessed with a daughter on the same day of hijacking on 24 December, 1999.

When he called his younger son to inform that he will be going to Afghanistan under Taliban, his younger son offered to go in his place. But, Kunwar Jaswant Singh has a sense of duty.

Many in government suggested him to send some deputy. What if Hijackers keep him there in Kandahar?

1/Image
Jaswant Singh was born in Jasol, a small town of erstwhile Jodhpur state. Jasol has given many fine military officers to India.

Lt. Gen Hanut Singh Rathore, war hero of 1971, Fakhr-e-Hind was the cousin of Jaswant Singh.

Son of Jaswant Singh also served in Army.

After freeing the hostages, Jaswant Singh and his staff stayed back in Kandahar.

Some hijacker mentioned that they have left a “millennium gift for government of India”. So, IC814 had to thoroughly inspected before flying back to India with Jaswant Singh and others.

Hostages were sent back in different plane. See today’s ministers and imagine what brave devotion towards duty was this.

There was a risk that the plane had some remote bomb and could be blown off in air.

It did not happen. Jaswant Singh brought back all the hostages after exchange of 3 prisoners.

Jaswant Singh Rathore passed away in 2020 after such an eventful life.

Every performing artist of India owes a bit to Javed Akhtar. He is the reason music composers, lyricists, YouTubers, others earn from their work. 🧵

Thousands of great artists & poets died in abject poverty. Javed Akhtar ensured that it will never happen again in India.

I want to keep his contribution alive in memories of people.

Read on.

Background- for decades, music related artists did not use to get any royalty other than the fees paid to them for creation. While Producers earned millions of rupees, the creators got mere fees of few thousand as one time payment.

In fact, producers got the rights taken from creators in all formats which might get invented in future.

Eg- a song of a movie on audio cassette was popular in 1985 but in future internet was invented and even on Youtube the original creator will get zero money. All the royalty will go to producer who purchased the rights while making the movie.

2/Image
This lead to poverty of even greats like OP Nayyar. He made the songs like
-Leke pehla pehle pyaar
-Taarif karun kya uski
-Kajra Mohabbat wala
-Udein jab jab zulfein teri and many others.

When such a man had to fight poverty, you can imagine the situation of others.

Indira Gandhi was the true angel for wildlife and forests of India.

As India is growing older, very few Indians realise that hunting was legal in India even for 25 years after independence.

Every year, thousands of foreign tourists used to take this Hunting trip to India as they do with poor African nations.

Animals could be killed, anyone could enter the forest and shoot. Tigers, Leopards, Elephants were collected as trophies.

You would not believe but there was a huge market in Delhi for tiger skin and body parts! It was that normal.

1/Image
Image
In 1961, Queen Elizabeth of England came to India and killed a tiger. In whole world she was criticised for this. But it was perfectly legal here.

In fact, this was the way to show the hospitality by Indians. Arrange a hunting trip for guests. Several military generals and bureaucrats took this hunting trips too.

There were travel companies in India specifically just for hunting. Even government agencies advertised for hunting ads outside India.

2/Image
Image
So, in 1969, IUCN had its 10th meeting in Delhi, India. There they decided to bring a framework to conserve forests and wildlife.

India started making draft of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Indira Gandhi faced a strong opposition from Hunting Safari operators, people who were addicted to hunting, and others.
Economists in Government said that it will affect foreign reserves of India as Hunting brings dollars to India.

But Indira ji did not budge and the Act was passed in August, 1972.

That was just the first step!

Why slums survive in Mumbai and other places? Why authorities are unable to end slumification?

The answer lies in a Landmark judgement of 1985.

In 1981, CM of Maharashtra A R Antulay announced that he will remove all the slums of Bombay as most of them have encroached upon the pavements and there is no space left in Bombay to walk.

If you watch 1970s-80s movies, most of them show that a builder wants to remove a slum and sends bulldozers or goons to clear the land. That theme is due to what happened in Bombay, 1981.

1/Image
Image
Antulay also said that slum dwellers have worst lives and the state is unable to improve conditions of these slums. Health and social hazard. Increased crime rates, privacy of women, every argument was given to evict the people and clear the slums.

Mumbai Municipality BMC started eviction drive. They used a section of BMC act, 1888 in which no prior notice was needed to evict the “trespassers” on Govt property.

Protests started in Mumbai. 2 slum groups filed petition in Bombay High Court that they have lived for such a long time in those slums and it is their right to live there.

2/
A journalist Olga Tellis also filed a petition on behalf of pavement dwellers. History was going to remember this name as a Case Law, a Landmark Judgement, and something which will protect millions of slum dwellers in India from forceful evictions.

Why her petition was different?
Olga Tellis appealed for Second Generation Rights.

Second Generation Rights are fundamental rights which are part of the original rights but not written clearly in constitution.

For eg- You have Right to Marry the person you like, it is essential for your Right to Life. But, Right to Marry by choice is not clearly written.

Right to Privacy is also not clearly written but is a part of Right to Life.

So, in Olga Tellis petition, slum dwellers did not claim that the land belonged to them. They instead claimed that they are not trespassers. They are forced to live in slums and footpaths due to their life circumstances and they need to live close to their livelihood. The petition claimed that it is a part of their Right To Life under article 21. They cannot live far from their livelihood.

The case went to Supreme Court.
