Kao was born in Varanasi on 10th May 1918 in a Kashmiri Pandit Family which migrated from srinagar dist. and was raised by his uncle . Aftr Cmpletng his inter in 1934 he completed his B.A.degree from Lucknow Univ. nd Masters in English Lit. frm Allahbad Univ. (2/n)
He joined Police imperial service by clearing civil services in 1940 nd ws posted in Kanpur as ASP, later He ws deputd to IB and mad incharge of VIP security incldng the security ring for PM Nehru Ji and later 2nd PM Shastri Ji. (3/n)
In late 50s he was sent to Ghana to establish Security and Intelligence Organisation. Kao alng wid Brits and chinese agnts prbed d crash of Kashmiri Princess, wich ws Locheed aircraft ownd by Air India wich exploded mid air in pacfic ocean while enroute to Jakarta frm Bmbay.(4/n)
After Intelligence failure during Sino -India 1962 and Operation Gibraltor 1965, India felt a need of separate organisation for gathering info for Military purposes and Kao was hand picked by Mr. Nehru who knew him well from years of personal security . (5/n)
He was made director of Aviation research center located in orissa which concentrated on gathering technical intelligence. In 1968 Indiraji bifurcted IB to form RAW, while IB kept reserved for domestic purposes, RAW was created as external Intelligence agency(6/n)
He had unlimited access to Indira Ji, closest association that an Indian Prime minister ever had with country"s Intelligence chief. He worked as Security Advisor for Indira Ji as well as Rajiv Ji.( 7/n)
During Bangladesh liberation when Pakis Launched Operation search light, RAW played a highly important role by providing arms and training to Mukti bahini, It is said op. Bangladesh took place in 2 phases, phase 1 by Kao and Phase 2 by Manekshaw. (8/n)
During 1971 war intelligence was so thorough that Airforce could bomb the room in which east pakistan cabinet was in session. Naval commandos was able to blow every single ship in chittagong harbour. (9/n)
Kao can also largely be credited for merging sikkim in India in 1975 as 22nd state. Kao also played a substantial role in arming tamilian guerrilas in Srilanka. Kao also created NSG in 1980s during Punjab Terrorism. (10/n)
His contacts were world over, particularly in Asia—Afghanistan, Iran, China, you name it. He could move things with just one phone call. He was fiercely private man, he was rarely seen in public. He knew too much to make a public statement or write a book .(11/n)
In 1977, the Govt. of Indira ji was toppled when defeated by Janata Party. However, Kao had privately advised Mrs. Gandhi not to declare emergency. His tenure had been extended by Mrs. Gandhi otherwise he would have retired in 1976 otherwise. (12/n)
During Moraji desai's Govt. enquiry was setup which cleared RAW and Kao from all blame of emergency.He returned when Indira made a comeback in 1980.He died in 2002 at age 84.(13/n)
Famous Author @nitingokhale has written a book on his life named"Gentlemen Spymaster", In January 2020 Karan Johar announced to produce a movie on him on basis of book. F. Nadiadwala hs announced a 20 episodes webseries feauturing Nana Patekar as Kao (n/n)
