Today is the memorial day of Subramaniya Siva, the relentless & firebrand freedom fighter who spearheaded the freedom movement in TN along with VOC & Bharathiyar. Following the footsteps of Tilak, he lead a number of protests & was imprisoned many times by British.
This took a toll on his health and he got leprosy. Citing that reason, British banned him from travelling in Train. He travelled throughout TN by foot & bullock carts to spread the message of complete swarajya. Despite struggling financially, he started the magazine ‘Gnanabhanu’
The magazine published many nationalist articles against the then Govt incluing the poems & stories of Bharathiyar. He was also trying to build a temple of Bharatha Matha near Dharmapuri. However, disease got better of him on this day in 1925.

குசேலர் கண்ணனிடம் சென்று ஏன் தன்னுடைய தேவையைச் சொல்லவில்லை ? இது கேள்வி

குறள் - தன்னிடம் இருப்பதை மறைக்காமல், கேட்டவுடன் கொடுப்பவரிடம்கூட, இரவாமல் இருப்பது உயர்ந்தது என்ற காரணத்தால்.

இப்படி ஒவ்வொரு குறளுக்கும் ஒரு உதாரணம் தந்திருப்பார் பண்டிதர்.

Maliyadippati, near Keeranur - Pudukkottai has a wonderful cave temple popularly known as Olipathi Vishnu Graham (Kan Nirantha Perumal). This Pandya cave temple belong to 7th - 8th Century CE. The Vishnu temple was carved out of a small hillock in the village #Walktotemple
In front of the temple, one can see the Garuda, Bali Peedam and a Dwajasthambam. The temple was built with a Mukha Mandapam (front hall) and then the sanctum. The temple has a number or reliefs which are covered with Stucco & paint was applied on top.
In the Mukha Mandapa, on the eastern side there is a relief of Mahavishnu in the standing posture. The Vishnu has four hands with top ones having Shanka &Chakra. The lower right hand in Abhya Hasta & left hand rests in waist. Sridevi & Bhoodevi are on either side

So what exactly is the Nandanar story. Unfortunately the Nandhanar Charititam written by Gopalakrishna Bharatiyar went too far from the original history as mentioned in Sekkizhar’s Periya Puranam, which is the authentic source as far as the 63 Saiva Saints are concerned.
Why did Gopalakrishna deviate so much and added so much of ‘masala’ is anybody’s guess. What is more appalling is that the legendary SS Vasan made a movie straight out of this story line & popularised. Thus this one stayed as if it was the correct version.
The actual life history of Nandhanar goes like this.Periya puranam says Nandhanar was born in pulaiyar caste
His profession was making announcements playing the drum (Parai).This was as per govt grants
