Universities in the UNC system — including UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Wilmington — are planning to fill their dorms to normal 100% capacity, pandemic notwithstanding, with students randomly selected.

The CDC says that's the 'highest risk' campus housing.

2/ Insider Higher Ed couldn't get anyone from the UNC system to talk about this decision.

Students who are uncomfortable with that housing arrangement can't get their money back, unless they register for classes that are all online.

All as N. Carolina has more covid than ever.
3/ Those decisions — how to design housing for UNC system students, whether students can change their minds based on the pandemic surge — seem wrong on their face.

Certainly not made with the health of students in mind.

But also they seem to put the UNC system itself at risk.
4/ In typical college dorm settings, with normal density, you don't need more than a few people infected with coronavirus to unleash your own mini-pandemic right there in the dorm.

Which will cripple the university's ability to function this fall, & put faculty & staff at risk.
5/ And *forcing* students to abide by housing reservations they made in the spring, & put their health at risk as circumstances change dramatically — that's building in a devastating situation for their health & UNC's liability.

Who @UNC_System is making these choices?
