Some international analysts say relations between the countries are at the worst since diplomatic ties were first normalized in 1979.
Earlier this week, the U.S. ordered the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston, accusing the Chinese diplomats of economic and scientific espionage. The State Dept. has said it is looking towards closing down further consulates across the country.
Chinese policy experts have said there is no cooperation between the countries and the pandemic has only heightened the tension.
