Horrific war crimes were committed last week by Putin and the Russian army invading Ukraine. The world is ignoring them, as it ignores in general the Russian Federation's war in Europe. 1/8
On July 13 a Ukrainian scout, Lt. Dmytro Krasnohrud, was killed by a landmine in no-man's land near Zaytseve, north of Russian-occupied Horlivka. This turned out to be a trap, set by the Russian army, to commit the war crimes which followed. 2/8
A local truce was arranged between the Ukrainian army and the Russian army in the area, the 1st Army Corps (so-called "DPR"). Ukrainian medics went to retrieve the body of the killed scout, wearing and displaying the internationally-protected Red Cross emblem. 3/8
Russian forces ambushed the Ukrainian medics, violating all the rules of war. One of the medics was killed and two more were wounded. Only one of the wounded medics made it off the battlefield. 4/8
Nikolai Ilin, a combat medic serving with Ukraine's 137 Marine Battalion, was killed. His body was returned to the Ukrainian side four days later by Russian-led forces. The body had been cut open and gruesomely mutilated. 5/8
The wounded Ukrainian medic was Marine Sgt. Yaroslav Zhuravel. He was left alone on the battlefield for three days until he died. The Russian occupation army refused to allow a rescue operation. 6/8
Putin is the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. He is responsible for war crimes committed by Russia in its war against Ukraine, including the war crimes committed on the battlefield near Zaytseve on July 13 and subsequent days. 7/8
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is commander in chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He abandoned the wounded Ukrainian medic on the battlefield. He refused to authorize a rescue mission and left Marine Sgt. Zhuravel to die. Zelenskyy's inaction is unforgivable. 8/8
