A thread on why #Utah should rename #PioneerDay to #UndocumentedImmigrantDay. 1/X
Every year, the state of #Utah memorializes the entry of Brigham Young and the first group of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) settlers into the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. 2/X
In the 1830s, Joseph Smith founded the LDS Church (formerly known as the Church of Christ) when he established this religious movement on the east coast of the United States. 3/X Map of the United States in 1845 -- She Tiny.
The Church of Christ was unlike any other church from the 1800s. One notable practice that set them apart from other churches was their approval and encouragement of polygamy--a marital practice that was quite juicy and not very well taken by monogamous religions of the time. 4/X
In the mid-1830s, religious persecution and--hashtag--divine revelation, led Joseph Smith to lead the migration of the Church of Christ from New York to Missouri to Ohio, and finally to Nauvoo, Illinois. 5/X
In Nauvoo, the Church of Christ began settling, however, continued to face faith-based discrimination and persecution, which ultimately led to the incarceration and eventually the assassination of Joseph Smith. 6/X
Fast-forward a few years, after facing continued discrimination in Nauvoo, Brigham Young, the new LDS Church leader, had one of those--hashtag--divine revelations, which led him to lead the Church to escape oppression and violence in the only way possible: illegal migration. 7/X
In 1847, a group of about 150 members of the LDS Church packed up their belongings and set route South West. I will venture out here and call this group a "Migrant Caravan." Uhum. That's right. An LDS Migrant Caravan. 8/X
On July 24, 1847, the LDS Migrant Caravan illegally migrated across the U.S.-Mexico border into Alta California, Méjico (spelling appropriate of its times and the colonial legacy of Mexico as well) where they settled on stolen indigenous land. 9/X Map of Méjico in 1847.
IMPORTANT: The stolen land we know today as #Utah is the land of the Ute, Dine', Paiute, Goshute, and Shoshone. New Spain (which became México), colonized and settled these lands and then the U.S., which mass murdered its inhabitants in the name of Westward expansion 🤢. 10/X Tierra Robada / This is Stolen Land art by Xico Gonzalez.
It was not until February 2, 1948, when México and the U.S. signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that Alta California was incorporated into the U.S.--another problematic historical account which I will not get into. 11/X
Therefore, on July 24 when Utah celebrates #PioneerDay (AKA #Daysof47)--through its various peculiar traditions--it is, in fact, celebrating #undocumentedimmigrantday and we need to begin recognizing it as such. 12/X
EPILOGUE: Settler-colonialism and racist nativism (Pérez Huber et al., 2009) are alive and well in Utah and all states where Whiteness is projected onto stolen indigenous lands via its White supremacist, capitalistic and anti-Black structures and social institutions. 13/X
#PioneerDay simply serves as a reminder to memorialize, commemorate and immortalize the historical legacies of White supremacy in the world and in this state. 14/X
I also find it "ironic" (read: enraging and disgusting) that the U.S./Utah chooses to remember White undocumented immigrants as "pilgrims" and "pioneers;" however, frames Black and brown immigrants as "alien" and "illegal." 15/X
FINALLY, I do not believe that calling #PioneerDay "#UndocumentedImmigrantDay" is the solution but one way in which the state can begin to recognize, confront and own up to its problematic roots and legacies. If I'm being honest, #AbolishPioneerDay is a much better solution. 16/X ABOLISH Pioneer Day
