Revealed: we have a list of the 4 sites in Kent due to be converted into post-Brexit lorry parks 1/ bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
One is just inland from the famous White Cliffs of Dover. Sources say this field by the White Cliffs Business Park, near a nursery, secondary school and leisure centre, has been earmarked. It'd have capacity for 1,200 lorries 2/
Another is the Waterbrook Park site, next to the Ashford International truck stop. This'd have capacity for 950 lorries waterbrookpark.co.uk 3/
Then there's the disused Manston Airport. This was part of the government's original no-deal planning. Then it was decided it would become an airport again. But it's now back on the cards as a lorry park - capacity: 5,800 4/
And of course there's the Ashford MOJO site, where work has already begun. Capacity - 2,000 trucks 5/
Why is all this needed? Well, even if there's a UK-EU free-trade deal, Britain will be out of the customs union, meaning all freight will need customs declarations to cross the border. The government wants to avoid trucks getting to the port with incorrect or missing paperwork 6/
Because if they did, you've got the risk of massive tailbacks and supply chain chaos as trucks are stopped, likely on the French side, by border officials. So you create these holding pens where you can divert lorries in advance, if you think they don't have the right docs 7/
How do you know if they've got the right docs? That's where the govt's new app and IT system will come in (still in development, yet to be tested). App will tell a driver if they have right clearances to proceed to port 8/ bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
And if a lorry tries to approach the port without the right clearances and disobeys the app/disobeys orders to go to a lorry park, it faces a fine of ~£300, exact numbers to be confirmed 9/ bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
These lorry park plans have provoked anger among local Kent residents. Kent overwhelmingly voted to leave the EU, by 59% to 41% 10/ kentonline.co.uk/ashford/news/t…
A caveat: no final decisions have been made on these Kent sites, and the government could look elsewhere. We know they're looking for 10-12 sites across the country ends/ theguardian.com/politics/2020/…
