sometimes I think we may not all be on the same page after all. On scale: Image
some ideas
—if you are an economist, reject neoclassical economics & use stock-and-flow-consistent models (flows & limits of resources).
—lawyers: reflect the limits of *law* in a climate-constrained world
—polsci/IR: same —> material limits of *societies*
Our problems *start* at the scale of billions of tons of carbon; while in politics people's biggest ideas add up to 1,000s to millions of tons (bikelanes, Green New Deal, etc.). But, MORE profoundly: timescale. What if all needs to happen *decades* faster?
this still blows my mind on a semi-daily rate Image
On thinkability, I guess

@GhoshAmitav's (@RupertRead @RoyScranton) points but by god, we need a few more people to ask these questions; they won't answer themselves. /cc @bethsawin if anyone knows how to get lawyers (in larger numbers) to think systemically? that would be neat! Image
I sincerely like this wise answer. The only question to the 'ways as we walk them' worldview is, which *foundation* can we choose to walk on, when all trajectories to date point in the wrong direction? /cf @nephologue @WEilenberger? esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/ccgg/trend… Image
To conclude (the decarbonization tweetstorm/legal question): I trust there are positive solution & *also* that we must put the boundary conditions as strongly as I did above. Carbon, as a Gt-scale problem of accumulation in the atmosphere, gets far too lenient reviews in my book.
Positive, genuine learning starts by questioning the existing ideas that keep us stuck repeating old errors. The newest iteration of linear thinking at regional scale, ie "what if we exported 'solar power' from Australia to Singapore"—it doesn't work—here:
This is an interesting example bc presumably we are not the intended audience for this oped—some investors, politicians, regulators?, are—but still; hence worthwhile having a quick look at how such discourses are being repeated time & again. /cc @BenFranta
