It’s baffling that just two weeks after a really constructive debate where the Sutton Tories supported @SuttonCouncil plans & spoke positively of the merits of school streets, low-traffic neighbourhoods and temporary cycle lanes... #StreetspaceLDN
they are now actively campaigning against the majority of the schemes. Unfortunately this flip-flopping on issues and opposing anything the @SuttonLibDems bring forward at any cost has become the modus operandi of the Sutton Conservatives.
For the Tories it’s never about trying to make our area better but always about short term political opportunism. The irony is that our schemes have been scrutinised, funded & approved by the Tory Gvt & the Labour Mayor.
These are temporary trials for 6 months and have the potential to deliver streets with less traffic, less noise, less speeding and better air-quality. Every resident living in these ‘low-traffic neighbourhoods’ will be able to drive onto their street and retain easy access but...
we will minimise the amount of rat-running. Not every scheme will be perfect the first time & it is natural that after discussion some schemes will be amended or taken forward in a different way. We look forward to working with residents during the trials bit.ly/2OQnsQh

Update on Butter Hill/Mill Lane area LTN. The public consultation is now open: bit.ly/301G31M. For many years, residents living in the Butter Hill and Mill Lane area have contacted the council concerned with excessive and dangerous traffic using residential streets...
as a cut-through to avoid the main roads. Residents have complained of speeding, dangerous driving & long traffic queues. The narrow residential streets in the area were not designed to accommodate the current volume of traffic. According to traffic counts from 2017, Mill Lane...
...and Butter Hill receive on average over 3,000 cars daily. The proposal is to allow pedestrians, cyclists and emergency services to cross the bridge at the junction of Mill Lane and Butter Hill but to restrict access to vehicles at this location.

Update on Sutton North #LTN launched on 14th September. We are trying to achieve the following: 1) Improve safety in the Grennell Road and Benhill Wood Road area by reducing traffic levels and speeds. 2) Reduce air pollution due to lower traffic numbers.
3) Make the area more pleasant and safer for children. 4) Reduce the number of non-resident vehicles cutting through the area. To achieve that we are trialling: 4 road closures to motor vehicles and 20mph speed limit in the North Sutton area.
These measures are in response to a residents survey in 2017, when you told us that you felt there was too much traffic in the area and a further consultation earlier this year on a 20mph speed limit. When the idea was recently proposed for the addition of a closure in...

THREAD - Browning Avenue area #LTN. Ahead of the launch on Monday 21st September hopefully this helps clarify a lot of the questions I have received about this scheme #LDNStreetSpace.
Firstly I appreciate that many are skeptical & don't think it will work. That's why this is a trial. I will be monitoring the situation and pushing for any adjustments when necessary, including lobbying for more money if needed.
It will take time for this scheme to bed in before residents see the full benefits but if it becomes clear that it doesn't work it will be removed. The public consultation page will be up once the scheme is in place.

Update on North Cheam #LTN launched on 14th September. Here's the page to the ongoing public consultation. Feel free to give us your views: bit.ly/3c88b84. Image
Changes are now being made to improve the quality of life in Esher Avenue and Wrayfield Road and the surrounding roads. We are trialling the following changes: 1) Road closure of Esher Avenue at its junction with Wrayfield Road opposite the access to Fairlands Park.
Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to enter.
2) Double yellow line waiting restrictions either side of the closure point.
3) A School Street scheme to restrict traffic outside Cheam Park Farm Primary school at drop off and pick up times, Mon-Fri during school term times.

A few thoughts on Kings Lane & Sutton South Area #LTN launched on 14th September. Firstly here's the page to the ongoing public consultation. Feel free to give us your views. bit.ly/2Fv6E0d
We are trialling the following changes: 1)Trial road closure to motor vehicles in Kings Lane over the railway bridge at the junction with Hillcroome Road/ Upland Road.
2) Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able use the bridge.
3) Trial 20mph speed limit in the roads south...
...of the railway between Banstead Road/ The Crossway/ The Downsway/ Brighton Road which are not already 20mph.
One resident told us that, despite initial reservations, he was now sold on the idea. After just a few days, he was impressed that children were already enjoying...

THREAD: Here’s my statement on low-traffic areas/school streets to the Strategy & Resources Committee on 14th September. bit.ly/35J5VTC #LTN #StreetspaceLDN
The key question Cllrs should ask themselves is the following: What type of residential areas do you want for Sutton? Are Cllrs happy to keep the status quo? In certain residential areas this means turning a blind eye to thousands of cars rat-running,...
...trying to save time on their journey, and pumping toxic fumes directly into people’s bedrooms. Every individual will look at their own circumstances but my role is to look at the bigger picture and at the interest of all local residents.
