Someone just aptly described this (below) as "Moralistic Therapeutic THEISM" (a play off of "Moralistic Therapeutic Deism"), which I think that's pretty accurate. And it is what is being taught and preached in many of our evangelical circles. (cont'd) 1/4
A more holistic (and biblical) view would be sinful people needing atonement to a righteous God AND Jesus as a healer and restorer. The two truths go hand in hand. What God has brought together, let no man tear apart. ;) 2/4
FYI: I am NOT questioning the salvation or Christianity of Lentz, Bieber, or anyone in their circles (I'm actully cautiously hopeful for JB's spiritual formation). But I will critique that what sells in many of our churches is actually an incomplete, truncated gospel. 3/4

Important thread by @drjjwilliams. I encourage you to read the whole thread, and I'll provide some thoughts of my own in a sub-thread. Sin is a condition: a spiritual force and "power" that holds the whole world captive, not just discrete acts that one commits. 1/
The reason that many white evangelicals have a hard time seeing that systemic racism exists is because they only tend to view "sin" as the latter, whereas black Christians do not. Emerson & Smith show this in their seminal book "Divided by Faith" thru years of research data. 2/
Fleming Rutledge in her magnum opus "The Crucifixion" uses developments in biblical scholarship to show that "Sin" is perceived as also a power and force (esp w/ Paul). Evangelicals' "cultural tools" inhibit their perception of this because of their individualism coram Deo...3/

Thread on "evangelicalism." Decades ago, a young group of Christians including Billy Graham, Carl Henry, Harold Ockenga and others set out to start a movement that didn't fall to the extremes of liberalism on the one hand and fundamentalism on the other. 1/9
They became known as "neo-evangelicals," but soon they were just "evangelicals." They wanted a Christianity that was orthodox but also engaged culture constructively and not just antagonistically. Henry would write about social justice. Graham befriended MLK. 2/
Ockenga started the org that would become "World Relief." John Stott included social action and justice language in the Lausanne Covenant. Their vision was growing.

Yet this all stagnated over the course of the century. 3/
