Because practically everybody is actively supporting the facade of the base decency of employment.

They only start to get honest once they know you’ve experienced a crack...and even then they won’t tell you the whole truth because they need the lies themselves.
“Your job isn’t who you are” is a partial truth to keep you invested in the system.

The whole truth starts when we talk about how a job will change, consume, and even destroy who you are and who you want to be...but that’s painful for anyone to admit.
As always, yes, even a good job.

Anything that dictates your sleep patterns, where you live, who you spend time around, how often you see your friends, family, and children? It might not be who you are, but it’s in the drivers’ seat. #BlackBurnout
Seriously...on a practical level, how do you sort your identity from something that requires so much of your time and dictates so much of your life?

Extraprofessional interests only go so far. How do you keep that up over *decades*?
I say that as someone who was only employed for just over a decade post-graduation and fought tooth and nail, the entire time, to invest in the things that made me, me.

End of the day they still bent to my job and it’s still been a struggle to see ME post-employment.
And I’m someone with a relatively strong sense of self and long-standing vision of who I want to be as a person. Maintaining that while still progressing and treating myself with care has been hard.
The sad fact is that *plenty* of us really do lose our lives, selves, and relationships to our jobs. Look at lists of deathbed wishes and you’ll see how many regrets are rooted in employment.

That’s why I don’t take anything about employment lightly. Life is too precious.
