A career is academia is only available to a small % of PhD grads. We need more exposure to the wide range of meaningful careers available to #PhDs. A thread on a professional development course at @UM_RadyFHS @CHRIManitoba, with generous support from @NanaLee03
Grad school traditionally includes the bottom arrow, but what if it also included time to reflect on what you like AND what you are good at, learn about other career options, think strategically about how you spend your time, and learn high quality #scicomm skills?
This course runs PARALLEL to your grad school journey, and has 3 parts. During reflection, you figure out what is important to you, identify the skills you have that are applicable outside of academia and rough sketch a 5-year plan.
To know where you want to go, you have to determine your WHY. Why are you doing the research you are doing? To find a cure for cancer? To improve youth mental health? Try to align everything you do with a WHY that is important to you. These are meaningful engagements.
#Scicom is so important. Can you talk about your research to a 4 year old, someone at the grocery store, or your grandparent? When applying for jobs, employers look for the IMPACT of your actions/ research, in both written (resume) and verbal (interview) forms.
We are close to finishing the first pilot of this course with a group of 10 students. I have loved every minute of sharing and discovering together.

Comment below 👇👇👇👇 do you have a course like this at your school and if not, do you wish it existed?
