SLS, on the many pressures on Nigeria’s FX reserves: In 2019, Nigerians spent 10 billion dollars every quarter importing services; and 3 billion dollars per quarter on foreign travel alone.
SLS on this webinar: “Why does Nigeria need to import leather products, Petroleum products, rice, Maize, we do not need to spend billions and billions of dollars on these things.”
SLS reflects on how he’s much less critical of economic policy today than in 2016/17: I am now endorsing precisely because this is what we said should happen - subsidy reforms, FX reforms etc - a whole series of things moving the economy in the right direction.
SLS: Soludo was the most successful Governor of the CBN, in terms of FX management. I certainly did not achieve that, much as I tried. Soludo’s excellent management is why when the 2008 crisis hit,we had the buffers which allowed me to carry out the reforms I did when I took over
