#CUNYsummerofstruggle
BFS/FOC/LFS statement, endorsed by @pscbrooklyn pscbc.blogspot.com/2020/06/execut…
ARC reps faculty and staff and students in every aspect of Brooklyn College except higher administration & recognizes shared struggles to create a more diverse college that we all deserve. The dismantling of white supremacy requires resources. ARC demands systemic changes.
.@RheaBonita1 A lot of us come fr diff places & political perspectives. White supremacy affects all aspects of society. Assumptions abt individualism, family structure, work ethic, religion, status, & authority are all situated under a logic conditioned by racial capitalism
White supremacy extends far beyond just individual bias
.@AntiRacist_BC : the transformation we seek begins with specific demands -- which are addressed in this timeline of inaction :
antiracistcoalitionbc.wordpress.com/the-inaction-t…
Some of these demands are new iterations of longstanding demands. Some of these demands are new demands from this moment that is part of a larger movement. These demands show that coalition between faculty, staff and students, and are student centered.
These demands are not a buffet but a cohesive plan. All must be implemented: drive.google.com/file/d/15HgwHo… #CutCovidNotCUNY #RacistBC @AntiRacist_BC @AlanAAja1
Meeting with President Michelle Anderson and Cabinet: 7/23/2020 --> Immediate steps in respect to the Anti-Racist Coalition’s Demands --> 👇
1. Leadership: The Anti-Racist Coalition @ BC will be recognized as a leadership partner in the dev & implmt. of the anti-racist agenda on campus. This requires that ARC will work in conjunction w the pres’s cabinet on all initiatives where decision-making will be in consultation
cont.

, and will require a majority approval process, with ARC faculty, students, and staff.
2. Staff Advocacy: Immediate review of denied staff promotions and differentials in the last two years. The review should set the standard of transparency and
fairness that will be later advocated by the Staff Ombudsperson.
3. Endowment/Fund: The immediate creation of a foundation account that supports students of color (whether that be in terms of pedagogy, or travel to conferences). The guidelines for this endowment must be established under close consultation with members of ARC
Cont.

and other professionals to ensure the long-
term effects that it is to have on the lives of those who can benefit from it.
4. Faculty Hiring, Retention, and Promotion: The first lines in the upcoming academic year will go to the Departments of Africana Studies and Puerto Rican and Latino Studies, in addition to a commitment to fundraising to
cont.

support the development of a pipeline of scholars, post-docs, adjuncts, and alumni to develop their teaching and research.
5. Anti-Racist Pedagogy: Dedicate funds for developing critical pedagogies, materials, and trainings for anti-racist instruction in conjunction with external consultation with the African American Policy Forum. This is in addition to
recognizing faculty who already invest time
cont.

and energy to this effort. In this way, we can both recognize the important work being done in house while also incorporating other experts in critical pedagogy to transform Brooklyn College into an anti-racist institution.
6. Campus Safety: Immediately restrict access of the NYPD on campus and issue a public statement and work towards ensuring the trust of BIPOC students. This public acknowledgement leads the initiative to transform the idea of safety that is anti-racist and student centered.
Real partnership is near impossible unless we can agree upon what antiracist work requires. And legal arguments support the status quo and are themselves racist. In order to actually change things, we need to be creative -- Prof Lawrence Johnson
Speaking the language of systemic change is not the same language as that of political correctness. @AntiRacist_BC is demanding systemic change. -- @kellyspivey
To address demand 3, @BCPresAnderson needs to both push up for state changes and also support the creative set of ideas that @AntiRacist_BC is asking BC to implement
People fear for their life on campus because of their identity. This is directly rooted in white supremacy. Demand 5 is student centered, but it is important that students are not the only ones concerned about their safety from surveillance on campus. -- Assata Gonzalez
Anti-racist pedagogy is pedagogy that changes the power dynamic. It is a PROCESS. The challenge is how to implement it across different disciplines and how to also address micro-aggressions that staff often experience from faculty. -- @SaufongAu
Brooklyn College keeps saying that we don't have the money. Well, show us the bank account! We need fiscal transparency -- @SaufongAu #cutcovidnotcuny
