Our update is published. States reported 733k new tests, the 2nd-lowest number in the past 2 weeks. They also reported just 53k new cases, the fewest since 7/7, though still a huge number by pre-July standards.

As for hospitalizations, well… we have more to say about that.
Data on current COVID-19 hospitalizations has been unstable since July 15. We’ve written up everything we know about the problems hospitals and states are having, and about some unexpected discrepancies in the state and federal data:

For now, we've unfrozen all states hospitalization data, and you'll see a drop of 2,000 in the national statistics. Please read the post above for context on this number and the new ones from HHS.
COVID-19 data is complicated and easy to misunderstand. It's important to note that the HHS directive requiring hospitals to change reporting systems has *not* affected case and testing data, which comes from state health departments, not hospitals. More in the blog post above.
States reported 1,121 deaths, a small rise from last Tuesday. Southern states reported 640 of those deaths.
