As colleges decide how and whether to reopen in the fall, many campuses have already been hit by the coronavirus.

We surveyed every public 4-year college in the U.S. along with many other top universities and found at least 6,300 cases tied to them.

Our survey is the most comprehensive look at the toll the virus has taken at U.S. universities: outbreaks on Greek Row at the University of Washington; the football team at Clemson; 438 cases at Central Florida.

Cases were tied to at least 270 colleges.

Universities are taking varied measures as they prepare for the school year.

At the University of Texas (440+ cases), in-person classes will be capped at 40%.

At Peru State College in Nebraska (0 cases), they will recommend that dorm residents wear masks in common areas.
O’Bryan Moore, a senior at the University of Georgia (390 cases), said he is worried about the safety of his classmates and teachers. He said he was skeptical that students will widely follow guidelines to wear masks once they return in August. nyti.ms/39GPdnN
