As we cough, sneeze, talk, breathe, we release droplets (small fluid particles) and aerosols (smaller fluid particles) into the air. The transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via aerosols matters much more than officially acknowledged.🧵
2)U. Nebraska Research found aerosols containing SARS-2 in rooms of COVID19 patients. Others found patients release SARS-2 by exhaling—without coughing or even talking. And one person is thought to have infected 52 at choir practice, likely via aerosols...

1) It's official: research that found infectious SARS-CoV-2 in air samples has been peer-reviewed: "significant environmental contamination in rooms where patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 are housed and cared for, regardless of the degree of symptoms" @Prof_Lowe @nature
2) Window ledges not used by patient also contaminated, likely carried by airflow. Hallway air samples turned up viral aerosols, likely carried by those exiting room. Personal air samplers all positive, despite absence of cough by most patients while sampling took place...
3) Study suggests SARS-CoV-2 environmental contamination around COVID-19 patients is extensive, and hospital procedures should account for the risk of fomite, and potentially airborne, transmission of the virus.

1) It's not uncommon to recover from COVID, test negative, and then test positive again down the line. Happened to ~1 out of 5 recovered patients in large China study (preprint.)
Reason was not re-infection: after testing negative, many tested positive while in quarantine...🧵
2) Also, 23 of those who retested positive (after testing negative) had interactions with over 96 others, but none of the 96 got the virus. That suggests the 21 had cleared the virus and were no longer infectious, despite testing positive again...
3) That's also supported by the fact that researchers couldn't recover the live virus from people who were retesting positive. Bits and pieces of the RNA genome of the virus was present, but live virus couldn't be cultured...

1)TWO CDC REPORTS: There are 10X more infections than reported. That means current ~4 Million reported cases is a huge undercount.1st study did random testing in Indiana. Random is key because 1) we undertest and 2) we bias tests toward symptomatics & their contacts...
2) but we know asymptomatics are also spreaders. Study found 44% of infected had no symptoms in past 2 wks. They estimate infection-fatality rate ~0.6% (six times more than flu.) High prevalence among minorities—likely ones working essential services...

3) 2nd study looked at antibodies in individuals across 10 cities. Again, 10X as many people had antibodies than reported cases. This has consequences for re-opening. With so much virus circulating, social distancing & masks more important than ever
