Sangameswarar Temple, Bhavani (Erode)

This is an ancient temple built by the first Pallava King, Mahendra Verman. The bird’s eye view of this temple shows it as an island surrounded by the two rivers. The temple is situated at a confluence of three rivers –

Cauvery, Bhavani and Amutha Nathi or Amuthavalli (an invisible underground water source). Thus, Bhagwan Shiva at this place is called ‘Sangameswarar’. The temple is situated at the foothill of Padma Giri and is surrounded by four hills - Naga Giri, Veda Giri, Mangala Giri +
+ and Sanga Giri.

This is one of the 276 Devara Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam (Devaram Padal (pathigam) – hymns rendered by Saiva saints – Nayanmars) and 3rd in Kongu Nadu.

Apart from Sri Thirugnanasambanthar rendering pathigam for Bhagwan Shiva in this temple, Arunagiriyar in his Thirupugazh sings praises for Bhagwan Muruga (who has a sannidhi in this temple).

The legend is that Kuberan, the lord of wealth was visiting various Shiva temples when he saw an Ilandhai (Jujube) tree on the banks of a river. He was astonished to see that a deer, a tiger, a cow, an elephant, a snake and a rat were drinking water without any sign of enmity.
He felt that the peace and prosperity of this place could be due to the worship and penance performed by the holy men (Gandharvas) who inhabited this place.

It is believed that Kuberan heard a voice from the sky saying that this was the place where the Vedas had originated and +
that he would find a Shivalingam beneath the Ilandhai (Jujube) tree. He was also advised to worship the Shivalingam to seek the Bhagwan’s blessings. Kuberan worshiped Bhagwan and was blessed with a darshan. The tree (sthala vruksham) is still there and bears a lot of fruits.
Another legend associated with this place is that Sage Vishwamithrar is said to have installed another lingam on the banks of the river and worshipped it by chanting the Gayathri Mantram. Hence this lingam is called “Gayathri Lingam”.

Highlights of this temple:

1.This sthalam is famous for performing rituals to satiate one’s ancestors. Dosha nivarthi parikarams (pooja done to safeguard one from bad influence of planets) is also done here, including Naga Dosham
2.Urchava/Utsava moorti (procession statues) of all 63 Nayanmars are arranged in steps (similar to Navratri Golu). Surprisingly, Thirumuruga Kripananda Vaariyaar is also included as 64th Nayanmar.
3.There are two identical stone statues in front of the Ambal shrine.
When water or milk is poured on them, it looks as if one of the idols is smiling while the other is shedding a tear. This exemplifies the artistic excellence of the era.
4. It is believed that those who takes dip confluence of this river on Surya Grahana and Chandra Grahana attain moksha

I have visited this place several times as part of Sabarimala pilgrimage and always find it refreshing as well as rejuvenating experience (for atma) when +
taking a dip in the river.
