Lord Risley Morphs Jati-Varna into Race

Sir Herbert Hope Risley (1851 - 1911)

Was a powerful colonial bureaucrat at the Royal Anthropological institute and developed the Nasal index theory based on Max Muller’s speculation.

Prior to British the jati varna system in India had little, if anything to do with race.

Jati is a highly localised and intricately organized social structure, its dynamic in nature and horizontally organised unlike the British version of vertically stratified.

Gandhi led himself to postulate the oceanic circle for ideal Indian village rather than the western pyramid model of hierarchy.

Max Muller study of Jati was pure out of evangelical motive, he interpreted Rig Veda and and claimed only first three Varnas were Aryan,

while the fourth was shudra. He based this notion on a single word”anasa” ( Rig Veda : V.29.10 ) that noses were described differently for different tribes.

The younger Risley idolised Max and took his work and started to work racist theories on India.

He further took the causal nose refrence turned it into the centrepiece of his racist ethnology of India.

Risley further used American slavery as his frame Aryan invasion theory.

Risley became the leading authority of Indian ethnology.

He was appointed the commissioner of Indian census. He created mutually exclusive ethnic categories and gave them legal significance.

In 1910 Risley became the president of Royal Anthropological Institute.

Risley further advocated that the superior Aryans where white in color and the Inferior Dravidian were black, with a biblical point of Ham and there by dismissing the Vedas.

In other words white Aryans mixing with black Dravidians caused the caste system and contaminated the Indian society.

Risley wrote “ in India White Aryans
Brought into close contact with an unequivocal black Dravidian race.

The conquering men of the dominant race had intercourse with the women they have captured. So it’s the white men having sex with woman of colour that produces the various inferior offspring races of half breeds”. Which he claimed was actually based on Verbatim of Vedas.

One very important point missed by historians is that Risley did not know Sanskrit. His work was based on Max Muller who knew Sanskrit.He took some vague reference of Max’s work and and put in his own interpretation. Risley has not read the Vedas.

Dr.Ambedkar after studying extensively on Nasal Index system rubbished this idea ,

he said.....

Evangelist Caldwell knew once an idea becomes entrenched in the institutional machinery and eventually in the collective imagination of the public,

it can be used for all sorts of exploitation Machinery

To this day Indian society’s legal frame work is Risley’s creation and his work on India’s communities dominates today’s caste wars and shapes Indian politics.All the policies of Nehru were written with Risley as a reference
