@OnyeAjuju Mom was called nwunye di in village/compound and knew what her relation to those women were. In the case of women in town or parties, they clearly meant they were “sharing” her husband. They even translated “my co-wife” if she “didn’t hear Igbo.” Also boldly laughed, taunted her.
@OnyeAjuju I saw one. She said more than nwunye di. She was touching Mom’s hair and waist, saying “nwanyi ocha, I makwa mma,” asking if “our husband” will come see her soon. Mom turned deep red, pulled me and stormed away while the lady giggled. As an adult now, I can see Mom’s humiliation.
@OnyeAjuju Talking to my mother years later about it, she told me it happened all the time. Mom lived in Enugu 25 years, perfectly understood Igbo, even if she couldn’t speak well. She tied wrapper, went to August meeting, cooked local soup. Of course she KNEW when Dad’s hoes insulted her.
