As #ChangeOver wednesday beckons and my twitter feed fills up with #TipsForNewDocs, I thought I'ld buck the trend and share some #tipsforolddocs based on my 11 years as a junior doctor, 7 (and counting) of which as a registrar. A thread (1/n)
Your F1s weren't born Drs
Don't assume what you've learnt over 5, 10, 20 years is common knowledge to them. No other profession comes close to the relationship of a jedi master/ young padawan as what we've in Medicine. Nurture and cherish this relationship. #tipsforolddocs (2/n)
Repeat after me, "I will remove the phrase "back in my days" or other similar phrases from my vocabulary." You aren't in your juniors shoes. So stop comparing. Makes you sound like an old prick. (3/n)
Don't be a prick when taking referrals. Nuff said about that. #tipsforolddocs (4/n)
Your juniors look up to you. Your words to them matter. Some will have sleepless nights solely based on the nature of their encounter with you. Again, don't be a prick. #tipsforolddocs (5/n)
English may not be the first language of many of your juniors. So some words may not come naturally to them. You can't spell "rectum" in Swahili- yet you did your electives in Kenya. Don't belittle their lack of fluency. (6/n) #tipsforolddocs
Avoid using acronyms or if you are using acronyms, tell your juniors what they mean. You still can't tell your BAE from your BFF even if your life depended on it. So, spell out the BIBA and the CIBH. (7/n) #tipsforolddocs
If you want your juniors to request a scan, please tell them what they need to write on the request form. Mindreading wasn't a module at med school. (8/n) #Tipsforolddocs
Don't introduce yourself as Dr X to your patient while introducing the F1 by their first name. However young and hip they may look, they earnt their degree. At least ask them how they'ld like to be introduced to patients. (9/n) #tipsforolddocs
How you behave with your juniors and your other colleagues will shape how your juniors behave with their colleagues in the future. Don't backbite and belittle. Ditch the subtle condascending undertones. Bury the ego. (10/n) #TipsforOlddocs
