If you’re unlucky enough to be in the situation of trying to care for a household member who has COVID-19, here are some suggestions for how best to do it:
• Have the infected person in a separate room with the door closed.
1/10
• If practical, try to keep windows open to improve air flow.
• If possible, they should use a separate bathroom to others in the house.
2/10
• If there's only 1 bathroom, avoid using it straight after the infected person, and keep a window open to promote airflow. Wash down surfaces e.g., door handles, toilet seat, the flush buttons, and sink area with either bleach or alcohol-based hand rub on a dry cloth
3/10
• If there is to be any type of contact, maintain as much distance as is practical between you and have both of you in a mask. (The greater benefit with a mask is reducing the spread of droplets from the infected person rather than protecting the uninfected person.)
4/10
• Leave food at the door for them to collect
• Collect dirty dishes & wash in hot, soapy water. Using gloves is sensible but wash your hands after removing them. If you don’t have gloves, wash hands thoroughly after handling items from the infected person
5/10
• If handling their dirty clothes or bed linen, put them in a bag to take to the laundry and then wash them straight away using hot cycle. Don't shake out dirty items in case this creates an aerosol. Gloves are again sensible but still wash your hands after removing them.
6/10
• Drying clothes and bed linen in the sun will also help remove any residual virus, although laundry detergent will do this well.
• Communicate using facetime if they’re feeling up to it.
7/10
• Pets can become infected with COVID-19 so keep them away. It is not certain whether the pets can pass on the infection to others but it seems prudent to keep them away.
8/10
• Clean surfaces such as trays or their bathroom with either alcohol-based hand rub or bleach cleaner on a dry cloth. Wear a mask, glasses and gloves when doing this.
