A thread on the collarbone angle & how it is a reflection of diaphragm function

When you see narrow, seemingly pulled-together collarbones, that is usually coupled with an ⬆️ in upper back extension and rib flare in the front ribcage.

What is going on here is a tightening...
of the neck muscles due to a poor breathing pattern.

These types of individuals generally have poor diaphramgatic function as it is unable to properly operate to bring air into the ribcage.

These individuals will generally show a “pooch belly” which is an indentation of the
abdomen due to the diaphragm changing it’s line of pull on the ribcage (De Troyer, 2016).

This means the diaphragm is essentially “stuck” in a contracted, descended state.

When this happens, the secondary, accessory respiration muscles in the neck usually try
to “pull up” on the ribcage in order to help open it to bring air in.

This usually results in a more forward head posture & tight neck.

A potential consequence of this would be limited inhalation mechanics, resulting in ⬇️ ability to bring oxygen into the system and therefore
a limited cardiovascular system due to poor oxygen uptake to the working tissues.

These individuals are often compressed from side-to-side in their ribcages, which is another reason why their diaphragm can’t function very well to ascend and descend properly.
In order to address this, getting the diaphragm to work again would be a good starting point.

A position like this would be a good way to allow them to restore expansion because it allows them not engage traps/neck & feel expansion from side-to-side:
