#UniformCivilCode is often debated for political purposes. Whereas the public finds it difficult to understand the topic. To eliminate ignorance, we all must know what it is all about.

So here's a thread🧵RT if you like (1/11)
Article 44 of the 🇮🇳 Constitution states that: - "The state shall endeavour to secure for citizens a Uniform Civil Code throughout the territory of India." (2/11)
UCC is the common set of governing rules for all citizens of India which refers to replace the personal laws (based on religious scriptures and customs). It resonates with one country, one rule (3/11)
It covers areas like:
Marriage 👰‍♀‍🤵
divorce 💔📑
maintenance 💸🛒
inheritance 🏠🎑
adoption 👶👵
the succession of the property. 🏨➡️ (4/11)
In India, we have uniform CRIMINAL code, thus criminal laws are uniform and applicable equally on all, no matter what their beliefs are but civil laws are influenced by faith. (5/11)
The Supreme Court hailed the State of Goa as a “shining example." it has a common civil code called Portuguese civil code 1867, whereby:

🍹A Muslim man whose marriage is registered in the State cannot practice polygamy.
🍹A married couple share property equally. (6/11)
Uniform rule is required as different personal laws promote #communalism and it leads to discrimination at two levels:

🛕🕋between people of different religions.⛪️🕌
👭👬between the two sexes. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑👫

(7/11)
Following, are the merits I'll keep them self-explanatory:

👩‍🏫National Integration
👩‍🏫Simplification of laws
👩‍🏫Simplification of Indian legal system
👩‍🏫Establishing a secular society
👩‍🏫Gender justice

(8/11)
De merits, you ask are:

😰difficult to formulate a uniform set of rules, due to diversity in 🇮🇳.
😰perceived as an encroachment on their rights to religious freedom.

Lack of awareness incites fear in folks who fail to understand the act. (9/11)
In my opinion, in accordance with current times, the need has arisen for having UCC for all citizens, irrespective of religion, ensuring that their fundamental and Constitutional rights are protected. Even Secularism and National Integrity can also be strengthened by it. (10/11)
In the end, we should recall the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “I do not expect 🇮🇳 of my dreams to develop one religion, i.e. to be wholly Christian or wholly Mussalman, but I want it to be wholly tolerant, with its religious working side-by-side with one another”.
