Lilian’s story represents the story many households in urban and rural areas where individual continue to face tough choices when it comes to energy. These choices have impacts on the health and well-being of individuals. #InclusiveEnergyKE

#EnergyStory1 highlights the many sources of energy that individuals use in their daily lives and the considerations they have when making these choices.
Most households use more than one source for lighting and/or cooking. Stacking therefore remains a key area of focus in any efforts towards sustainable energy for all #SE4All #SDG7 #InclusiveEnergyKE @SEforALLorg @ICLEI
The question is:
How can we make energy inclusive in informal settlements so that the choices are only between clean energy sources? #InclusiveEnergyKE
@EnergyMinK @UKMECS
What initiatives should counties who have the mandate of planning, regulation, and operations and development under the 2019 Energy Act be setting in place to achieve #Se4All

In many developing countries, charcoal is the primary cooking fuel for urban households. Furthermore, charcoal can be purchased in small quantities for very little money on a daily basis. Jane Nthambi a food vendor shares her experience. #InclusiveEnergyKE
Use of charcoal for prolonged periods of time may lead to respiratory problems. Meet Martin Paul on our sixth energy story runs a butchery and restaurant in Lucky summer. He is looking for cleaner and cheaper energy to grow his business #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Kerosene is mainly used in informal settlements in the urban areas and rural parts of Kenya to power cookstoves and lanterns because it is considered to be quick and easy to use although its cost is high. Meet Kennedy Mwangi on #InclusiveEnergyKE story 7 Image
The briquettes are cheaper than charcoal in the long run, and can be used for a long time, as they burn slower and for longer. Briquettes, can lower their carbon footprint while being affordable. Meet Alice Ndegwa on the 8th episode #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Data from the UN Development Program indicates that 3 billion people around the world - 40% of the world’s population - rely on polluting and unhealthy fuels for cooking. Meet Alice Wambui, a porridge vendor in Kayole who uses briquettes

The Kenya Cooking Sector Study estimates that the annual market value of charcoal consumed at the domestic level alone is KES 68 billion. Did you know 8.1 M households in Kenya still use wood as their primary cooking fuel, followed by LPG at 19% (2.4M) and charcoal at 10% (1.3M)? Image
4.3 million households in Kenya depend solely on fuelwood for cooking. Which cooking solutions would you recommend to Elector Atieno who uses firewood to cook the githeri she sells in Mathare North Area 1 that is cleaner, more efficient & cheaper to save costs? #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
In promoting alternatives to the TSOF, the headline messages are those around fuel cost savings. Although this is an important consideration, it will be most attractive in areas that are fuelwood constrained.

If at Kes 1,125 shillings (approx $ 11 USD), 70% of all households in Kenya are willing to pay for a 6kg cylinder of LPG that means if there's a subsidy or financing,70% are already willing to transition to LPG says @EEDAdvisory. Watch #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Murefu Barasa @EEDAdvisory: The three stone cooking stove is the Toyota Corolla of cooking. It is sophisticated because it is adjustable, has dual or triple benefits, uses multiple fuels and has no parts that need repair. Is it archaic? #InclusiveEnergyKE
Biogas is filling a gap in where developing economies are fast growing but power is costly, unreliable or non-existence. Meet Dominic Kahumbu the CEO for Biogas international Ltd.What are the other benefits of biogas besides heat energy? #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Biogas International Limited has designed simple solutions to daily challenges that will benefit the people and assist in poverty eradication. The larger system can consume up to 500 KGs of biodegradable waste per day and produce LPG #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
#InclusiveEnergyKE Policy Recommendation: A percentage of the energy budget every year going to decentralized renewable energy options and specified as to what's going to clean cooking. Watch energy stories on our Youtube channel

When the Government of Kenya enforced a ban on unlicensed logging and charcoal production in 2018, Rose Moses and her partners did their research that led up with Eco Makaa solutions. They make briquettes and briquette making machines. #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Energy Story 13: The imposed tax on solar and renewable energy generation equipment could undermine the country’s universal electrification goal. This could lead to a 17.5 percent fall in demand as they are bound to become more expensive #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Almost everyone interacts with energy through various ways, which are key catalysts for achieving SDG 7. Energy use, access and adoption is not getting the required attention so will Kenya meet the targets for SEA4ALL? We're still at 30% #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Energy Act: It is estimated that 31.1% of kenya’s population is urban and nearly half of the entire population will be urban by the year 2025.Nairobi city ranks highest in urban population with 4.397 million with 'slums' occupying 12%.

Nairobi is faced with serious urban planning and management problems and thousands of its residents live in informal settlements. Here's Paul Mbuthi, Deputy Director of Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum perspective #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Wood fuel provides the basic energy needs of the rural communities, urban poor and informal sector. A national energy survey shows wood fuel and other biomass that account for 68% of the total energy consumption (petroleum 22%, electricity 9% and others 1%). #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Elector Atieno, a business lady in Mathare has used firewood for the past 7 years. It has not been cheap but it has been available but her dream is to transit to using LPG.

Here is energy story 14 on our #InclusiveEnergyKE youtube documentary series Image
Like any other businesses, informal sector businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic, Lee Ngala worked at a car wash and a hotel in Ngara, but when the Corona Virus hit, he lost both his jobs. Here is how Covid 19 has impacted his access to energy.
Consumption of kerosene, used by most households in informal settlement for lighting and cooking has remained high, increasing by 11.3 per cent in April to 13,679 cubic metres from 12,291 cubic metres in March. #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
Nicholas shares his difficulties and challenges using kerosene and how Covid 19 has affected his income source thus relying on well wishers yet even with all the challenges he has to spend about Ksh 300 per week on cooking and lighting #InclusiveEnergyKE
By the roadside in Ngomongo korogocho you will find Eunice, struggling to sell fish. Whatever she sells, only enables her to purchase paraffin, that she uses as her daily source of energy for cooking since refiling her 6kg gas cylinder is a dream seldom realized.#InclusiveEnergyKE Image
As much as private sector has come in and implemented projects on clean cooking with community organizations, it has not been sufficient to transition people like Eunice towards clean and modern sources of cooking energy. What can we do? #InclusiveEnergyKE
The hustle of cooking gas ending midway through preparing a meal forcing one to make a dash to the nearest dealer or bring out the kerosene stove tucked deep in some kitchen cupboard. What do you use when you run out of LPG? Let's talk #InclusiveEnergyKE Image
@Envirofit smart gas is providing low – income households with flexible cooking gas, for as low as ten shillings. SIM/ GPS smart gas valve, enables families to use their phone to prepay for gas as they cook using mobile money. #InclusiveEnergyKE ImageImage
The smart valve allows Envirofit to monitor fuel use and automatically notifies customers and Envirofit to schedule the next tank. Here is Gerald Musembe who works for @Envirofit and talks about how their LPG division provides affordable #InclusiveEnergyKE
There is a push for the use of LPG, but the sellers say the uptake isn't as it used to be. Eric used to sell 13 cylinders a day, but since COVID-19 sales have reduced by almost half as most have gone back to kerosene, charcoal &firewood #InclusiveEnergyKE
