today i learned about something called "web assembly" and now i feel betrayed by ALL OF YOU
i have also learned some horrifying shit about typed arrays. who the actual fuck is in charge of this language
the only bright spot in this dreadful day is that both javascriptwtf.com and wtfjs.com exist.

TIL elastic doesn't have inferred schemas. I always assumed they did. :mindblown:

Lack of inferred/flexible schemas was the main reason we reluctantly spent nearly two years building our own datastore instead of using druid. It is absolutely fundamental to observability.
If o11y is about being able to "ask any question, understand any state, without shipping new code", then you need to eliminate any friction around accumulating richer detail.

You want to incentivize engineers to stuff in ANYTHING that might someday be useful, anytime, anywhere.
The last thing you want is for anyone to have to stop and think about managing schemas or migrations or updating clients to match the schema version or what the data type is, etc.

Same goes for indexes. Choosing in advance what people can efficiently search on? Not observability

This is a very good point. It is every bit as possible, and equally as common, for eng managers to err on the side of under-evaluating as over-evaluating.

If you under-eval, your team misses out on growth opportunities, and your comp and levels won't be fair or meaningful.

Well.. think about the differences between factories and artisans.
Imagine we're talking about building shoes, not software. You have a shoe factory. How can you tell if it's performing well?

You gather stats on # of pairs manufactured per day, how long it takes to make each pair, uniformity of the components, quality of the finished product.

if you can solve your app problem with a monolith, do that
if you can solve your architecture problem with a LAMP stack, do that
if you can debug your problem with printf to stdout, do that

just watch out for the day when the solution reaches its edge & becomes the new problem.
so, hey; I know I JUST said this, and I stand by it.

BUT ALSO.

if all you know are logs and print statements, you could probably stand to invest in your own repertoire of observability and telemetry tooling and techniques. it's an easy lift, and the payoff can be enormous.
yes it makes your work better in production, but even just on a personal level, better developer tooling is a force amplifier and an effort maximizer, a time saver and dot connector.

phenomenally productive developers are ones who tend to their personal toolkit. it pays off.
