CWULP ADVOCATES SUSTAINED MOMENTUM ON CAMPAIGNS AGAINST RAPE AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE
The Center for Women Underprivileged in Landed Property has called on women groups, organized civil society and all citizens of Nigeria to sustain the momentum on the campaign against rape and SGBV.
In a press release authorized by the Center's Chief Executive Officer, Mariam Ann Ologun, the group observes the wavering momentum of campaigns which are heightened only when media reports on rape are rife, whereas the menace is a continuing trend.
“About two months ago, we began openly expressing our displeasure with the alarming rate of RAPE and SEXUAL VIOLENCE in our society.
Recall that in partnership with other Civil Society Organizations, C.W.U.L.P participated in the march to the Governor’s office...
...the Attorney General’s office, the office of the First lady and the Chief Judge of Ondo State on June 5, 2020 to protest rape and sexual violence in the state. Subsequently, on Friday June 19, 2020 the Center for Women Underprivileged in Landed Property led by the
Chief Executive Officer, Mariam Ann Ologun in partnership with other women groups and organizations led a peaceful protest on major routes of Akure, the Ondo State capital, condemning RAPE and SEXUAL VIOLENCE in Ondo State and Nigeria in general.
C.W.U.L.P appreciates the audience granted by relevant authorities as well as the resulting decision by the state government to domesticate the Child Rights Act and VAPP Act in Ondo State, in a report credited to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Adekola Olawoye.
According to this report, “…any person convicted will serve life imprisonment while any offender less than 18 years will serve 14 years in prison among others.’’ While this is laudable, we challenge the State House of Assembly to critically review
the proposals by the Executive Arm in domesticating the V.A.P.P Act, while considering submissions from other critical stakeholders (women groups and mental health experts) who have professional relationships with perpetrators and victims of rape and sexual violence in Ondo State
... in order to produce a wholesome and indigenous government intervention.
For us at the Center for Women Underprivileged in Landed Property (C.W.U.L.P), we shall continue the advocacy for the quick and thorough adoption of the V.A.P.P Act to include the death penalty for rape..
as well as stiffer deterrent for other forms of sexual violence, owing to the Post Traumatic Stress that extensively damages victims and our society at large.
Rape is NOT NORMAL and we must end it.” #SGBV #EndGBV
