Among other achievements, Dr. Tony Fauci was one of the architects of PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (created under Republican President George Bush). PEPFAR has saved millions of lives.
Fauci said if we ALL do these five things, we can reopen the country.

Masks and social distancing
Avoid crowds
Outdoors is better than indoors
Washing hands
Stay away from bars
FAUCI: An AIDS vaccine is very very different than covid-19.

If you have a disease in which the body's natural response to the virus is inadequate, it is very very hard to make a vaccine... You've got to do better than natural infection to get a vaccine for HIV>
FAUCI: Making a covid-19 vaccine is much easier than
making an HIV vaccine.

"I've been developing vaccines now for 36 years... You feel confident when you start to see the data come in... I do feel cautiously optimistic."
FAUCI: He's cautiously optimistic about a covid-19 vaccine because studies so far show that the body does mount an immune response both to the virus itself, and to vaccines in early trials. That response doesn't happen with HIV. So a covid-19 vaccine is much easier to make.
Fauci: On Jan. 10, NIH learned the genome of the coronavirus; 62 days later, started a clinical trial.

They did everything "at risk," but the risk is to the money, not the patient. NIH proceeded as if money didn't matter. Normally, pharma is slowed down by financial concerns.
Fauci: Vaccine trials should be fully enrolled by this fall. We could get an answer on safety/efficacy by November or December.

"I hope that answer is that it's safe and effective."

We could get an answer that it's not.
Fauci: The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices advises the CDC on vaccines. It will issue recommendations on who should get a covid-19 first.

"If it's like we usually do, you'll prioritize health care workers, the elderly, those with underlying conditions."
@ashishkjha: Are you concerned about immunologic response in older people (to a covid vaccine)?

Fauci: "If things hold true with this vaccine, you would not expect the elderly to have as robust as response to anything." But "I want to see what the 30K person trial does."
What covid treatments are in the works?

Fauci: Three companies are developing monoclonal antibodies. A few days ago, NIH announced 3 trials. Two for prevention, one to treat people already sick. One is an outpatient trial, the other is hospitalized people NOT in the ICU.
Treatments for covid-19

Fauci: We're still analyzing data on convalescent plasma.

Looking at anticoagulants to prevent blood clots and strokes.

"There's a lot of action going on right now."
Fauci: Is he hopeful about covid-19 treatments?

Drugs for HIV were revolutionary, he said.

If doctors "can do that for HIV, we can do it for this disease."
@ashishkjha: What should we invest in to prevent the NEXT pandemic (after the coronavirus)?

Fauci: "We need to build up the public health infrastructure, locally and domestically in our own country.... We've also got to build up our international links."
Fauci: How to prepare for next pandemic?

Pick classes of microbes that you'll dealt with. We learned about flaviviruses (yellow fever) to help combat Zika.

"Building up vaccine platforms against coronaviruses helped us save a year and a half" against SARS-CoV-2.
Fauci says we're seeing the same racial disparities in covid-19 that we see in HIV: 13% of the population is African American, but 43% of new HIV infections are African American.

Fauci gives career advice to young doctors: The things that have affected my medical career have "not been things that I've planned. They've been things that have been thrust in front of me... So keep an open mind...
In 1981, something happened beyond control and that was HIV."
Fauci: Government can't do everything. Private industry can't do everything. But they work together, they can have a powerful impact.
Fauci: If this were measles & U could guarantee that if you get vaccinated, you're 97-98% protected. Then U don't have to worry about anything else. Just get yourself vaccinated... I believe we'll get an effective covid vaccine. The chances of it being 98% effective R not great.
Will we eliminate covid-19, like we eliminated polio in the U.S.?

Fauci: "What I'm shooting for is, with a vaccine and good public health measure, we could bring it down to somewhere between really good control and elimination."
Fauci: "I have not had a single day off since the very beginning of January when we decided we would work like crazy on a vaccine."

How does he rejuvenate himself? "I have a very extraordinary partner, my wife."
Fauci: "We're taking care of one of my daughter's dogs. Every night when I come home, it's really a routine. That dog never wants anything except to be with me ....I go for a long walk on the C&O Canal with my wife and dog."
