BIG THREAD
1. As I walk through this seaside, deep water port the wind is blowing at least 20 mph. Look at the chop on the harbor; it’s almost white-capping.

Yet every person who passes me wears a mask and glares at me like I’m no longer human.They are robotic,smug and afraid

2. I went into a Texaco station/convenient store to buy corn chips to feed the geese. “Please buy whatever you like. Half off. We are closing up” says the owner.

“Why?” I ask.

“Covid has killed my business”

3. There are no tourists here. This place, normally bustling in the shadow of Hurricane Ridge and alive on the Pacific breeze, is a Ptomekin Village.

All the set dressing is in place.

No actors. No cameras. No audience. No laughing kids. No aromas of fun food

4. This once busy Main Street is vacant. A handful of rank bars cater to the drunken at night but even their usually raucous carrying-on bounces off the dark, empty concrete.

There is no love in their laughter.

No goodwill in their clanking chortles.

Nothing.

5. A homeless woman,55(or 78)sits on a brick wall screaming “why are you trying to get me to destroy my life?!”

There is no one within a half block.

A seagull shrieks and flies away. I trudge along feeling guilty for carrying 2 bags of corn chips.

For geese. Canadian geese.

6. Precious metals are through the roof while small businesses in this once thriving town, built on a century of massive timber and an infinite fishery are closing so fast I cannot keep track of it all.

Something happening at “the top” is trickling down here, near the bottom.

7. While the states and feds make us sort through tax records and check the mailbox for $1200 (four months ago) a gym offering a comfortable space for retirees is gone. A karate studio for kids, gone. A local bank is no more. It is a vacant hulk, a leftover from 1980’s yuppiedom.

8. My thoughts push through and threaten a headache. But my heart craves truth and never stops learning.
Hundreds of books. Thousands of pages. “Hagmann Studio” on my cell phone screen. Or “John B Wells, mobile.”

Over 1800 shows since 2015. But a nagging persists. Did we fail?

9. Folks, is this “it”??

Is this the “thing” we’ve pondered?

Are we at the beginning of the nightmares we’ve grappled with since swallowing that first red pill?

26. I reject the debate among Christians and patriots about whether living a preparedness lifestyle is faithlessness or Biblically sound.

Why do we save money? The Lord’s prayer clearly says “daily bread”?

We do not pray “give us five years from now our annuity bread”

27. Why do we buy car insurance? Jesus promised us not a bird falls from its nest unbeknownst to the Father in Heaven.

Why seek higher education? Christ promised “all things added unto you”

We do these things because we wish to live responsibly and as hassle-free as possible.

28. Please look around your town. Listen to those willing to share their challenges transparently.

Why, when we are the “number 1 economy in the world”—

Why are the majority of us living on salaries and wages that are within a few bucks, or even less than what we made in 2000?

Of course not. I am asking you to ask yourself this question: if the grocery stores were empty, stripped bare, what would I eat? What would I feed my kids?
