Yes, the modern science of archeology is a British era thing.
Protection of old monuments was not in vogue. They instead built new if required. Mostly they didn't have to build, unless fellows like Suleiman Karani came along.

Marathas took Arun Stambh from Konark and respectfully put it at Puri. Where it is still worshipped.

Till the advent of Cunningham and his Archeology Dept, the British too tore down old buildings - like the Fort at Bombay to make way for today's Heritage structures.
The British - Frere specifically - seriously planned levelling Shaniwarwada for better air flow in Pune.
