Attending the "Pro Tips for Moving into Management" panel at #AAJA20. Crucial point from @AshleyAlvarado: It's important to differentiate between leadership and management. You can be a leader without being a manager.
What both @geostanley and @AshleyAlvarado look at when it comes to leaders in the newsroom:
- They solve problems
- They listen to the audience
- They think creatively about how to reach new readers

Love that @AshleyAlvarado looks to "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" for management advice.

She quoted this part: "The man is the head, but the woman is the neck and she can turn the head any way she wants." You want to be the neck.

Speak up! Higher ups started noticing @ByJudyLin when she started speaking up in meetings and sharing her thoughts.

This can be hard for different people. But great point from @AshleyAlvarado: Whatever makes you feel like an outsider can also be your superpower.

"You can be shy and you can be a good leader." -- @geostanley #AAJA20
Want to apply for a management position without having been a manager already? Use other relevant experience to show you have those skills. Ran the internship program? Mention that. #AAJA20
"It's a mistake to say that the only way to grow in an organization is to go from a reporter to an editor." -- @AshleyAlvarado

Amen. Think about what gives you joy in your job, not what you're "suppose to do."

"Hire great people and bask in their glory." -- @geostanley

Delegating is hard. But it's what great managers do. And those who don't will end up losing great direct reports who feel stifled.

.@geostanley recommends "Drive" by Daniel Pink as a management book. It lists 3 things that motivate people:
1. People want to be considered a master in what they do
2. They want autonomy
3. And they want a sense of purpose larger than themselves
#AAJA20
How can you manage across generations?
- Build trust
- Be humble. It's OK to admit your direct report knows more than you do
- Listen
- Make it clear you want to help your report succeed
- Do your best and create good will
