From a capacity standpoint, the Attorney General can’t do this job. The office doesn’t prosecute many cases. So we’ll have to spend a bunch of money to add prosecutors to an office that wasn’t designed to do this work.

Our Attorney General has almost no experience prosecuting. Your choice of a lawyer should not be based solely on advertisements, especially those in the form of short cable television fake tough-guy interviews.

The proposal to expand the Attorney General’s reach applies only to St. Louis City. Homicides are up all over our state. Why single out St. Louis? Because it makes for good TV? No... no, of course not, that can’t be!

We need a concerted, real push to reduce and prevent homicides. All the prosecuting in the world will never bring back a lost loved one.
We need to protect witnesses, use proven policing and social services strategies, and ensure accountability in the system.

If this was a real proposal, we’d be talking about investing in communities. We’d talk about funding education, increasing mental health and substance abuse services, hiring community mediators to diffuse situations, and civil rights enforcement.

I had to bury a kid I taught this past year. I had to talk to a witness who was scared to death to come forward. I had to talk to police who said there wasn’t enough evidence, to neighbors who want their communities to be treated with the same dignity as wealthy ones are.
