A Kamala Harris- HBCU funding thread: On this historic day let's discuss a favorite talking point of Trump fans. Harris is an HBCU grad (Howard University) but Trump supporters say "he increased HBCU funding by 14%." Let's talk about that. 1/
A reminder, in February 2018 Congress passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. One of the driving forces was President Trump’s desire to greatly increase military spending. That added more money to be allocated by Congress. 2/

Democrats used it as an opportunity for increased domestic spending. The Act increased discretionary spending by 21% over the cap. On 2/22/18, 14 Senators, led by Kamala Harris and Doug Jones began lobbying for HBCU funding. Here is the letter. 3/

So y'all stop giving away credit that belongs to Black women. Senator Harris has a record of advocating for HBCUs, not simply signing popular legislation. So anytime you see someone say Trump and 14% increase to HBCUs, just reply #ThanksKamala . 10/10

A THREAD: For the past few weeks HBCUs have been mentioned by folks with little to no understanding of them, as a proxy for the President's widespread support of African Americans. Let me share these footnotes. 1/
The President did sign the bill for FY20 which provided record HBCU funding. It was the result of bipartisan work in the Congress; the president simply signed it as part of the overall budget for the nation. 2/

The final product though differed from the President's initial budget, which ceased "providing any mandatory Title III funding, which represents an approximately $80 million fiscal cliff for HBCUs." 3/
