“Lying requires no work and has no limits. It demands no proof.... Told often and emphatically enough, lies can overwhelm the truth...” Brian Rosenberg

Quick 🧵on this evolving lie... 1/ Image Let's start with the "where they had none." HBCUs have had federal funding since the 1960s. You can see almost 20 years here. But note in 2008 there is a new category- mandatory funding. 2/

Since folks continue to speculate what's on this paper, I thought I should tell you. (Hint: nothing). A 🧵 1/ Image Way too many people think that Trump's HBCU executive order provided funding, provided permanent funding, or totally funded HBCUs. Point 1- there is NO MONEY allocated. In fact, you can't even find the word million or billion. 2/ Image

I’ve recently realized how often people cite Dr. Lomax “thanking” President Trump as proof that he was a consequential force in HBCU funding. A 🧵 about the thanks was nowhere near a ringing endorsement. 1/ ImageImage People get the quote from this article where it says “Michael Lomax, president and CEO of the United Negro College Fund, thanked Trump and the thousands of advocates who lobbied Congress to support the bill.” 2/

I've had enough of people sharing this article which masquerades as journalism, and even more disappointed to see someone who should know better add to the foolishness. So here is a 🧵to make it make sense. 1/ Here is the @Newsweek article. Newsweek is wrong for posting this article on a number of fronts. First, it summarizes a few paragraphs of the original article by the Associated Press, and then pastes the rest of the @AP article. 2/

A 🧵to answer @DeionSanders refund question. On Monday Coach posted a video asking the Mississippi Governor to look into why students receive their refund checks so late. Lots said "Amen." Let me give it a try.

The first misnomer is that this is a refund. That’s what it has always been called but it is an overage from a loan. It must be paid back. The loan was given by the Federal Government, not the state or the school. 2/

A #DU22 Commencement THREAD: I narrated what I called "The Story of the Class of 2022" instead of having a speaker this year. Here are some of the highlights. 1/ Chad. A THREAD on how the LACK OF DIVERSITY in JOURNALISM facilitates misinformation. For the past week Google University Ph.Ds have commented on HBCUA funding. They often cite this mainstream news article. 👇🏾 1/ The title is misleading and the article confuses folks first calling it $45B for HBCUs then saying it includes other minority-serving institutions. But the headline is wrong; saying it is just HBCUs is lazy. 2/

Since I've found so many new found HBCU advocates, I need y'all to do more than just tweet about the reduction in the proposed budget for HBCUs. First though you need to get the facts. Watch today, 12 pm ET/11 CT. 1/ Contact the members of the @EdLaborCmte and tell them to fully fund HBCUs at the level President Biden requested. 2/

A THREAD on the $30 billion HBCU cut lie: It's a lie. Critical thinking and understanding context have officially died in America. So folks are sharing this propaganda recklessly. So let me give some facts. 1/ Fact: "Each year, the federal government disperses about $1 billion to HBCUs through a mix of 15 programs such as Pell Grants and research and development contracts."
You can cut 30 from 1. Simple math.

A Trump Town Hall reminder. Man, the HBCU story continues to grow. Here is the president tonight. 1/ Reminder 1: In his FY20 budget he zeroed out the program he is now saying he funded. Look at line G. There was $79M in FY19, 0 in FY20 President's budget. 2/

The reason he can keep saying he funded HBCUs “because nobody was funding them for years and years” is because his supporters have no interest in HBCUs enough to ask basic questions. Really quick thread. 1/

The Higher Education Act of 1965 created a program so that HBCUs could receive Federal funds. So that's 55 years. 2/

A PLATINUM THREAD: When President Trump launched his Platinum Plan in Atlanta, he spent a few minutes discussing HBCUs. Watch the clip, and then read the fact check. 1/
Trump claimed Obama and Biden cut funding for HBCUs in their first year. Backstory: In 2007 the Title III F program was created by the College Cost Reduction Act signed by George W. Bush. 2/

I think HBCU students should look at both of the VP candidates. I have done threads on both but let me repeat the findings on VP Pence. 1/ Pence has gotten a pass. He opposed the 2006 “Reverse the Raid on Student Aid” substitute bill which included lower interest & year round Pell. 2/

A THREAD watching the #RNC2020: Twice yesterday HBCUs were mentioned. Vernon Jones suggested the president “delivered historic funding” guaranteed for 10 years, something he said had never been done before. Not true- we just completed 10 years. 1/
Senator Tim Scott also mentioned HBCUs. He said “Once again, to clean up Joe Biden’s mess, President Trump signed into law historically high funding for HBCUs, as well as a bill to give them permanent funding for the first time ever!” 2/

For @JoeBiden most of his HBCU connections are from his state, as he shares how Delaware State University students helped with his Senate campaign. He spoke for commencement there in 2016 and did a video greeting this year. 1/
As Vice President he announced a grant for HBCUs and cybersecurity funding. The announcement was made at Norfolk State University. 2/

Watching #DemConvention2020 and want to shout out @SenDougJones . He has REALLY gone hard for HBCUs during his term. Folks in Alabama need to send him back to the Senate. He hosts an annual HBCU summit 1/

A Kamala Harris- HBCU funding thread: On this historic day let's discuss a favorite talking point of Trump fans. Harris is an HBCU grad (Howard University) but Trump supporters say "he increased HBCU funding by 14%." Let's talk about that. 1/ Image A reminder, in February 2018 Congress passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. One of the driving forces was President Trump’s desire to greatly increase military spending. That added more money to be allocated by Congress. 2/
