📣 Thrilled to share our publication!

Our first case series of Dignity Therapy modified for the pediatric #PalliativeCare population.

Thankful to have had @TXgriefgirl as an amazing partner in this work.

A 🧵 with summary and some reflections

We attended the Dignity Therapy Training Workshop with @HMChochinov.

It was hands down the most impactful workshop I’ve ever attended and can’t recommend it highly enough.

Dignity Therapy is a legacy project in which a facilitated interview is compiled into a narrative document which a dying person can share with loved ones.

3/x
In our series, we had 2 groups: adolescents and pre-verbal or non-verbal children.

For adolescents, we used the standard model of Dignity Therapy.

For pre-verbal children, we interviewed the caregiver using Dignity Therapy by proxy to create a shared life story.

4/x
✅ All participants reported satisfaction with the project.

✅ Nobody stopped because of distress or discomfort associated with the interview.

⭐️ Final documents were shared by people at last goodbye gatherings and read aloud at funerals.

Undertaking this work has been one of the most meaningful projects in my career thus far.

Why don’t we talk more about the concept of dignity in children?

6/x
One of the biggest limitations in doing this work is that in order to participate, children need to be permitted to know that they are near the end of their lives and allowed to talk about it.

I don’t think we do that well or nearly enough in #Pediatrics

7/x
Why don’t we allow dying children more of a voice in their own care?

Why don’t we allow children to be more engaged in discussions of their end-of-life goals and wishes?

8/x
❓We often ask whether children can and should be engaged in discussion about the end of their lives.

Through doing this work, I am convinced that the answer is yes.

9/x
Please read and share this work and hopefully we can continue this discussion together.
