Why isn't Election Day a national holiday? A majority of Americans support the idea: 71% of Democrats & 59% of Republicans are in favor, according to @pewresearch. #velshi
I’m not looking for another day off—if you watch MSNBC a lot, you’ll know that vacation isn’t really my thing. But I AM looking for ways to make voting easier. Voting is literally the most democratic thing we do, yet it can be uniquely difficult. #velshi
A study from @pewresearch shows that the U.S. ranks near the bottom of industrialized countries in terms of voter turnout. As you’d expect, hourly wage earners have the lowest turnout, whereas salaried workers—who might set their own schedule—have the highest turnout. #velshi
Making Election Day a national holiday would allow working voters greater opportunity to cast their ballots. Facing long lines, voters wouldn’t have to choose between exercising their democratic right & getting back to the office. #velshi
In 2019, Democrats tried to make Election Day a national holiday, but Mitch McConnell dismissed it, calling it a “power grab.” Really? Qualified, eligible voters being given a chance to vote is a power grab? #velshi
Clearly it isn’t going to happen this year, but a new administration & Congress should think about it. There’s no federal law governing how much time you can take off to vote. Most states forbid your employer for punishing you if you leave work to cast your ballot. #velshi
America’s employers should consider leading on this one: treat Election Day like a national holiday. Give your employees the day off, or if you’re too small to be able to do that, give half of them the morning off & half the afternoon. #velshi
American companies can prioritize their employees knowing how voting works in their state during the pandemic. Encourage them to register & vote by mail if they can. Offer to help them plan out when they will vote, whether it’s on Election Day or ahead of it. #velshi
If your business can’t spare the hours, work with your staff to move their schedules around in the weeks before the election to give them time to vote. It’s not a holiday yet, but this year, America’s businesses can make Election Day something to celebrate. #velshi
