Spent the evening trying to make an algorithmic avatar generator to replace Gravatar. Been thinking about this for ages, the recent article on the WPTavern has pushed me to actually build it. A grid of user avatars. Man...
I've never liked the designs of Identicon, monsterID, Wavatar etc - and they all get served through Gravatar dot com anyway. This runs entirely in browser (with javascript) - so no external requests (privacy) and less data to download (speed).
Plus, as long as the hash is the same, the icon will be the same, so the generated images could travel across sites with you.
Added mouth shapes, and more hair, body, and face shapes - and tried in a circle shape (just a border radius). Looks pretty good I think 😄 Lots of pixelly avatars in ...
I've tweaked the avatar colours, and added more shape variations. I think it's looking pretty good. A grid of 80 pixel avatars....
And I've added support to Toolbelt so it can replace user avatars. You can see it on my website.

This (very old) post about Harry Potter has loads of replies so you can get an idea of the variations:

I don't plan to publish this as a public plugin until I'm 100% happy with it. Once it's public I can't change the code since that could change a users avatar - which makes the whole thing pointless.

I'll stick the code on Github though. Just need to tidy up the PHP.
