A thread about #DirectProvision and the Irish state. 
So @DeptJusticeIRL is monitoring people's tweets about Direct Provision. That means they are hearing first hand from asylum seekers about their fear during this pandemic, their inability to socially distance,

their worries for their kids, their isolation and how they are discriminated against by being treated contrary to public health guidelines. That means they hear directly from asylum seekers about how the system makes them depressed, makes them live in enforced poverty,

segregates them from the rest of society making it near impossible to integrate. That means they hear how people feel being moved around as if they are chess pieces, forced to share small rooms with complete strangers. That means they read the pleas from people to move them out,

to bring them to safe places
That means they read people saying they had to resort to hunger strike to be moved to safety. That means in the middle of a worldwide movement against racism they read how Direct Provision enables racism in Ireland and subjects people to it.

That means they read how much support there is here for people seeking international protection. That means they see how many people want this brutal, racist system to end. That means they read all of this and instead of thinking my god what are we doing to people?

How can we stop this? Why is this state hurting so many people, for so long, stealing years of their lives?
They ignored all of this and clung to the cruelty of the system. The shame of this state that is the treatment of people who have come here for safety and protection

for hope. What a terrible indictment. What needless pain caused. How much more enriched our lives are by the people who come here, how lucky we are to have them
