1/ Today was an interesting day with two interesting insights.
First ran headfirst into an Excel spreadsheet with 600,000 rows and 108 columns. Needed to build pivot tables on that data for a system validation exercise.
A 300 MB spreadsheet on i7 laptop with 2 M2 #SSD drives
2/ The 2 M2 SSD drives => #Intel vs #Samsung#Evo970. It was in saving Excel files that Samsung 970 showed its true worth.
It beat Intel version hands down in terms of through put and speed. On smaller sized files, the difference was noticeable. But with pivot tables, game over
3/ For someone who cut his teeth on a x286 with 640 kb of RAM and a teeny weeny hard disk, we have certainly come a long way.
The 2nd interesting insight.
I couldn't even think of doing this work on a laptop at this speed 5 years ago.
4/ Some day, I will sit down and put together a course on work with large Excel data sets on your laptops.
Let me know if you would be game for it.
