THREAD PART 2: DIAGNOSES/ COMPLICATIONS! Patient interpretations of ICU jargon @Saramerwin1 & I are writing for @CritCareGame- feedback welcome!
🔑Must be concise to fit on the cards
🔑Pt-centered clarity more important than accuracy
🔑ICU focused
Please share & comment!
Acute Myelogenous Leukemia/AML
“Blood Cancer”
Rapid growth of blood cells that don’t work properly in the bone marrow, crowding out healthy cells.

Is that clear for patients,@vsanchorawala @Jmarksloan @VincentRK @MikkaelSekeres
Meningitis
“Brain Infection”
Inflammation of the meninges (lining around the brain), often caused by an infection.
@doctorORbust @AllisonRBond
Necrotizing Fasciitis
“Flesh-Eating Bacteria”
Aggressive bacterial infection moves rapidly beneath the skin & around the muscles causing extensive destruction.

Clear for patients,
@TraceyDechert @callie_mt @QaaliHussein1 @JJcolemanMD @pferrada1?
Infected Wound
Wounds can be caused by any break in the skin. When the infection gets out of control, inflammation & damage to the tissue result.
Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN)
A life-threatening skin disorder with severe blistering, sometimes a reaction to a medication.
@DissanaikeMD @HarkerDavid
Asthma Exacerbation
Inflamed airways swell & tighten, making it hard to breathe. Treated with breathing treatments and steroids.
COPD (Emphysema) Exacerbation
Inflammation (swelling) and mucus build-up makes it hard to breathe. Often requires oxygen and breathing support.
Hemoptysis
“Coughing up Blood”
Bleeding from the lungs or windpipe (trachea) may require a breathing tube and bronchoscopy (a camera in the lungs).
Hematemesis
“Vomiting Blood”
Bleed from stomach or food pipe (esophagus) may require endoscopy (camera in the belly).
@GIJayMD
Influenza Pneumonia
“The Flu”
The flu virus infects the lungs, making it harder to breathe due to fluid & mucus. It looks like an “infiltrate” on X-ray.

How do you explain it,
@BhadeliaMD @jbaang
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the U.S. and is the most common cancer worldwide.
#LCSM @LungCancerFaces - trying to write a short pt centered description.
Pulmonary Embolism
“Blood clot in the lung”
These clots often start in the veins of the legs and move up to block blood vessels in the lungs, which strains the heart.
@PERTConsortium @jameshorowitzmd
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage/SAH
“Brain Bleed”
A form of stroke often caused by a ruptured abnormal blood vessel (aneurysm). May cause a sudden, severe headache; can lead to permanent damage or death.
@boissyad - is this a good concise pt centered description?
Sepsis
Sepsis is an uncontrolled inflammatory response to an infection. It can lead to shock and multi-system organ failure. Prompt treatment of the infection with antibiotics and support for the body with other medications as needed is crucial.
@virenkaul @MDaware @DrJRMarcelin
Cardiac Sarcoidosis
“Inflamed Heart” Inflammatory nodes in the heart can interfere with normal function, including the rhythm and pump of the heart.

Is that clear for patients,
@omarsiddiqi @MedCrisis @DocBrock9 @DrJMieres
Endocarditis
Infection of the lining of the heart including the heart valves. Can send bacteria to infect distant parts of the body through the blood.
@PaulSaxMD @AbraarKaran - is this a good patient centered description?
Status Epilepticus
(Ongoing Seizures)
Electrical disturbance of the brain that does not always result in whole-body rhythmic shaking. Consciousness may be affected; can last for five minutes or much longer.
@drdangayach @AmyGDalaMD
Delirium Tremens
“Severe Alcohol Withdrawal”
Setting in several days after the last drink, "DTs" include hallucinations, high blood pressure, and shaking among other symptoms. Alcohol withdrawal can be fatal.

How do you explain it to pts, @tony_breu @vineet_chopra @rbganatra
Myocardial Infarction/MI
“Heart Attack / Acute Coronary Syndrome”
The heart is deprived of its own blood flow, leading to the destruction of heart muscle.

How'd I do, @DrQuinnCapers4
Cardiomyopathy
Cardio (Heart) Muscle Failure
Weak or damaged heart muscle is less efficient at pumping blood through the body. Can be controlled as an outpatient or severe enough to need the ICU.

How'd I do, @MKIttlesonMD @JSawallaGusehMD? see the next one too...!
Stress Cardiomyopathy
“Broken Heart Syndrome”
Severe stress causes the heart to reshape and impairs its ability to pump blood through the body, a form of heart (cardio) muscle weakness (myopathy)
Cerebrovascular Accident/CVA
Stroke
The brain loses blood flow due to blockage (ischemic) or from bleed (hemorrhagic)
Guillain-Barré syndrome
Temporary paralysis due to nerve damage caused by your own immune system, but often triggered by an infection. Can be fatal without treatment.
Persistent Vegetative State
The patient shows no signs of awareness, but some bodily functions persist. Recovery is not expected.

(this is a tough one... please help!)
Sickle Cell Crisis
Inherited blood clotting disease, disproportionately affects Black and Brown people.

(want to add more detail, suggestions?)
Acute Respiratory Failure
Breathing Crisis: the lungs fail to provide oxygen to and remove carbon dioxide from the blood. Requires oxygen or even mechanical ventilation, a form of life support.
@msiuba @PulmCrit
Thyroid Storm
Excess thyroid hormone drives up the heart rate, blood pressure & temperature
(can you all plz help make sure that's pt centered? 🙏🏾)
