This Tweet went viral last week with @KamalaHarris's nomination as VP. Perhaps you saw it? It's nonsense, and it's incredibly harmful. I'll explain why. THREAD: 
So, on the surface, it looks very compelling. First level fact check, yes CoreCivic is one of the 2 publicly-traded prison REITs. And yes, roughly speaking, the chart in the tweet does show an increase after the time of the #KamalaHarrisVP announcement.
But a quick google search yields another explanation. Unless you think Motley Fool is part of the conspiracy, it looks as though CoreCivic is being added to the SmallCap 600 index, which means mutual funds and ETFs have to buy it up...
..so some savvy traders looked to buy it up first and then capitalize on a short-term increase. In fact if you look at the updated chart, it's already come down quite a bit. Still not satisfied? Well, let's zoom out even more, and this is where the harm I talked about comes in...
Here's the 5 year chart. The tiny blip at the end is the so-called Harris increase (and actually that spike started a few days before the announcement, further proving it wasn't about that.) In context, that "spike" looks pretty feeble, don't you think? What else do you notice?
Do you see what happened last election? That the stock TANKED when Hillary was assumed to be the obvious winner, and then skyrocketed when Trump won? This is because, in actual fact, Democrats are not good for private prisons, and Republicans are incredibly good for them.
In that same twitter thread, the original user also said "abolish private prisons." I agree! We should abolish private prisons. You know who also agrees? KAMALA F*CKING HARRIS. This is why this stuff is beyond merely ignorant or annoying, it's downright harmful.
If private prisons had a twitter account, this is the kind of thing they'd share. They stand to benefit from false equivalency based on bogus information. #KamalaHarrisVP is bad for private prisons. Please do the least bit of research before sharing stuff like this.
