“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde was not an astronomer & didn't have access to a fraction of the images we take for granted, but he knew the importance of space for inspiring change. He wrote this in a comedy play called Lady Windermere's Fan (about a woman who accuses her husband of an affair)
You don't have to be an astrophysicist to appreciate the magnificence of the universe. You need only look up in admiration and curiosity!
Think about how much missions like Hubble or Cassini have opened our eyes and given us a sense of awe about the beauty of the universe that lies beyond our thin atmosphere
Think about how much spaceflight has inspired us. Who wouldn't want to fly like a superhero on the International Space Station?
The things we look at are important. Not just what inspires us, but what holds our attention. As a science fiction author, I try to weave in science-positive narratives as science is under attack in our time as "fake news"
We live in a time of divisive politics & outright lies that often leave people feeling disheartened. You can't change anyone's mind. They have to do that for themselves. But #scicomm & the Overview Effect can help people see the bigger picture.

Keep your eyes on the stars!
